Jewish tradition says that:

  1. The entire Torah, the five books of Moshe contains the actual word of God,
  2. The Nevi’im, prophetic works, consist of the prophets’ own formulations and direct quotations from Hashem Himself.
  3. The Ketuvim, the Writings, though, present us with a third dimension in Godly revelation: That of humans speaking with divine inspiration.

That breakdown (Torah, prophets, writings) was endorsed by our Lord:

Luke 24:44
Now He said to them, “These are My words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things which are written about Me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled.”

I guess my question would be (in the light of the Luke verse) why did the gentile church adopt a different breakdown?
The break down is between the Old and New Covenant. In other words; what is to remain, and what was done away with? The answers can be found in scriptures.

That is not the topic of the thread. The OP has nothing about the New Covenant.

It is the breakdown of the Tenach (or OT) into Torah, Prophets and Writings; as opposed to Pentateuch, History, Poetry and Prophets. (the christian scheme)

Prophecy is as important as anything in understanding the scheme of things. And it is because of prophecy that we have a different understanding of things.

What does that have to do with the OP?
Or my comment about the christians messing up the division and order of the Tenach books?

Quote: How the Bible is divided in Judaism

Some believe that the Hebrew Bible order represents the order in which books were collected.

The Christian scheme with its New Testament takes prophecy into consideration.

Because the books thought to be most important - the synoptic gospels - being first hand accounts of Jesus' life, were placed first and then 'John's' gospel, which tells the same basic story, but in a very different way. Then the Acts appear to as a bridge between the gospels and the Paul story, followed by Paul's own writings, so that there was a continuum from the gospels right through Paul's letters.
No. NOT the new testament.

Why were the books of TENACH ordered differently?

the OP is only about Tenach.

OK - I can see what you were asking. Apologies for misunderstanding your post.

For starters, Daniel is seen as a prophet in the CT, but not in the Tanach where it is just another writing because the prophecy is seen by Christians as relating to / pointing to Yeshua.

In the CT the following are seen as history: Joshua, Judges, Samuel, Kings, Chronicles, Ezra, Nehemiah and Esther. There is clearly a different logic at work!

The books of the TeNaKh should be in correct order (using English names) as is true with my combined OT/NT 2011 Bible Translation made in China. Printng and binding quality AOK, if i do say so (retired Photo-Offset Lithographer) ...

Torah: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy
Nevi'im [Former Prophets]: Joshua, Judges, I Samuel, II Samuel, I Kings, II Kings,
[Later Prophets]: Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel [The Twelve]: Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah, Malachi
Ketuvim (Writings): [Poetical Books]: Psalms, Proverbs, Job
[Five Rolls ~ Megilloth]: The Song of Songs, Ruth, Lamentations, Ecclesiastes, Esther [Historical Books]: Daniel, Ezra, Nehemiah, I Chronicles, II Chronicles
The OT chronology reads better with I&II Chronicles at the conclusion of the TeNaKh.

The weekly readings begins with the first Sabbath after the Feast of Sukkot (Tabernacles) and goes through the year. For more information on weekly readings Google "Hafiarah" as you should find the following historical account quite interesting (pages 36-37) ...
Essential Torah

I have a bible dd 1906, written by Farrah Fenton who had never read the bible before and set about learning Hebrew, Chaldee and Greek and then translated the texts into English. The Tanach is in the correct order, but the CT has a few changes in its order

He writes that the Tanach is: Translated from the Hebrew, Chaldee and Greek languages. Amazing that he got the correct order! It would seem that his version of the bible went down like a lead balloon with the people. I think that was largely because of the changes he made to the CT.

I guess my question would be (in the light of the Luke verse) why did the gentile church adopt a different breakdown?
In the second century, the Church went through a period of differentiation from Judaism. Messianic Jews had betrayed Israel by not participating in the rebellion against Rome, creating a rift that still exists to this day. It is during this period that you had the famous debates between Justin Martyr (representing the Church) and Trypho (representing Judaism). It was during this age that you had bishops emphasizing the fact that the Lord's Day, being on the eighth day when Christ arose, was NOT the Sabbath day. You get the idea. I'm wondering if this was the beginning of it.

Another question I have is, how does the Septuagint break it down? We know that the Church adopted the Septuagint rather than the Hebrew Tanakh as its OT canon. All the quotes in the gospels and epistles are directly from the Septuagint.

Yep.. Bar Kochba.
Big mistake IMO.

Another mistake. Bad misuse of "day of the Lord" which signifies death and destruction

Not sure the Jews ever tried to put an order to the LXX. It was the property of the Greeks from day 1.

As to the NT quotes being verbatim from the LXX, I chalk that up to scribal editing.

The bracketed [The Day of the Lord] at the beginning of Joel 2:28 puts a 180 degree spin on what the day of the Lord means ... which Dave-W rightly expressed when he writes ... Bad misuse of "day of the Lord" which signifies death and destruction.
John's wording in Rev, 1:10, "On the Lord's Day" isn't really bad misuse as it could have meant an AOK day having an entirely different meaning than verses in the Tanakh and Brit Chadashah that read "day of the Lord" John is just as likely to be referring to either the 7th day of the week or the 1st day of the week according to the OJB translation.

Hisgalus 1:10 (OJB)I was in the Ruach Hakodesh on Yom HaAdon, and I heard behind me a kol gadol (a loud voice), like the blast of a shofar, [YECHEZKEL 3:12; SHEMOT 19:16]

So, is it Yom HaAdon (the Lord's Day) or Yom HaDin (Day of Judgement)? If Yom HaDin it's possible John's vision occurred on Rosh Hashanah ... who knows could have also happened on Yom HaAdon :)

Joel 2:28. Correct. I will edit that out. AS for (Day of the Lord) the revelation is speaking of the last days.

I can understand why, the pushing of the 'Judaizer' theme a scheme of the adversary to keep the newbies from knowing the True G-d and how he expects those who are called by his name to live.

I like how the description is, perhaps we could breakdown the books in the NT in the same categories?

Something like this:
