SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — With the reading of their own version of a Declaration of Independence, founders of the state of New California took the first steps to what they hope will eventually lead to statehood.

To be clear, they don’t want to leave the United States, just California.

“Well, it’s been ungovernable for a long time. High taxes, education, you name it, and we’re rated around 48th or 50th from a business climate and standpoint in California,” said founder Robert Paul Preston.

New California Declares Independence From Rest Of State

Their solution: Take over most of current-day California — including many rural counties — and leave the coastal urban areas to themselves.

"The current state of California has become governed by a tyranny," the group, led in part by vice chairman Robert Paul Preston, declared in a document published online.

New California declares 'independence' from California in bid to become 51st state

New California published its own Declaration of Independence Monday, with language similar to that of the US Declaration of Independence.

The declaration in part reads:

The history of the present Governor and Government of California is a history of repeated injuries and usurpations, all having in direct object the establishment of a Tyranny over the Counties of New California and the State of California.

Whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to seek a constitutional remedy to the abuse of powers.

We the people of the Counties of New California solemnly publish and declare these counties are, and of Right ought to be, a free and Independent State, that we strive to be free from the State of California, and that as a Free and Independent State, have full power to establish and maintain law and order, to promote general prosperity, and to do all other acts and things, which an Independent New California State may rightfully do.

We, therefore, the Representatives of the Counties of New California, appeal to the California Legislature and the Federal Congress to pass resolutions to create the State of New California. And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes, and our Sacred Honor.

New California declares ‘independence’ from California

"We are not changing the country, we are adding to it," co-founder of the movement Paul Preston told the Daily News on Tuesday. "We are forming a new state, we want to become the 51st state."

"New California" would include most of the rural areas in the state — organizers provided a detailed map of what it would look like.

Preston emphasizes that the leaders of the movement do not want to leave the U.S., just make it better. He believes that rural areas are virtually ignored and don't have proper representation.

I know a lot of people who have moved east of the Mississippi River to get out of California. I have heard a lot of stories of how tough life has gotten there....high taxes, wildfires, high cost of living, burdensome government regulations, water problems, insane political correctness, anti-religious zealots, santuary cities protecting criminals, deterioating moral values...the list goes on.

wow...there's a page in wikipedia dedicated to just this sort of thing: Partition and secession in California - Wikipedia
California, the most populous state in the United States and third largest in area, has been the subject of more than 220 proposals to divide it into multiple states since its admission to the United States in 1850[1] including at least 27 significant proposals in the first 150 years of statehood.[2] In addition, there have been some calls for the secession of certain states or large regions in the American West (such as the proposal of Cascadia) which often include parts of Northern California. One-third of California residents in a 2016–2017 poll supported peacefully seceding from the United States, up from 20% in 2014.[3]

I live in a small country area in Rio Oso, California. It will be apart of the "New California" if it ever passes. Most of the country areas out here are Republicans and the big cities like San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Sacramento are Democrats. With heavy taxes and people feeling that their voices don't matter this will give the state a fresh new start. Throughout cities like Yuba City and Roseville there are billboards about the "New California". So it would be awesome if it did pass

They should declare themselves a Republic and expand.

Just curious, how do you see that things would change? What would your economy look like? Could the NCA support itself without raising taxes?
Usually in states where there are big cities and large rural areas, it is the cities that contribute $ to the rural areas. It is the same with the states. States with higher federal tax revenues help those with less.

It would change in 3 major ways.

1. California's economy is great as it's the 6th of the best economies in the world. It's not just the big cites that bring in the money, it's also farmers. We know how to make money and want a bigger say in this state.

Importance of California Agriculture to the Economy - California Energy Commission

California surpasses France as world's sixth-largest economy

2. It will give lots of farmers and land owners in rural areas a bigger voice. Out in the country we all go to town meetings and are involved in our communities but we are not heard as liberal areas are far more populated. The values out here are a lot different then out in the big cities.

3. Plus it will give us all a big tax relief as this state has been taxing us for everything it can. The homeless is a huge problem here and it just gets worse as we are taxed to death. This is to help us to build us something new that we can be proud of. The "New California" claims to fight the taxations that we have been hit with and to help our neighbors who are hurting.

Why is liberal California the poverty capital of America?

They're leaving California for Las Vegas to find the middle-class life that eluded them

I support this movement but I don't think it will ever pass to be fully honest.

Good for them.

Usually the most effective action against rampant moral decay in a society is for those who are still capable of being bothered by it to make a decisive about face and deliberately separate themselves from the depravity which will inevitably arouse certain judgment against it.

...couldn't they just move somewhere else, not try and destroy the State they don't like?

Yep. My daughter and her husband moved from Burbank to a Phoenix Suburb last year. Same wages but a fraction of the cost of living.

And being avid mountain bikers and hikers they are absolutely loving it.
