Is it true that God so loved the world that He left the proclamation of the gospel up to flawed people who imperfectly delivered the message?
If so, they really didn't do such a great job because billions of people have lived and died without ever hearing the message, many millions didn't understand the message well enough to respond, and millions more saw Christians acting in some hypocritical way, so they were "turned off" to Christianity by Christians.
All of these people God loved so deeply and dearly, yet they are all in Hell. That's the "gospel" according to most of evangelical Christianity.
Are you and your "witness" all that stands between a sinner and Hell?
You stated ...'All of these people God loved so deeply and dearly, yet they are all in Hell. That's the "gospel" according to most of evangelical Christianity'. It's true, that God does offer unconditional love to people. But that doesn't take effect in a person's life until that person first comes to God on His terms. That is, a person must believe and acknowledge that they have inherited a sinful nature that has been passed down from Adam & Eve and this sinful nature does what it does best...it sins. And God is a holy God whose holiness demands that sin has to be dealt with.It has to be punished. Our sin can either be punished by placing our faith in Jesus Christ and what He accomplished on the cross at Calvary.Or we ourselves can receive the punished that our sin deserves.
I think instead of looking at this "problem" in a logical way like we humans have a tendency to do, we need to realize first of all that although it's true we are made in God's image, God is still God..the uncreated One that has always existed. And I believe in some instances that it's a lot better to believe what were told in the Bible without trying to over think it with our limited understanding which many times will only lead us to what we believe to be a logical conclusion that we dislike...like what you've offered as some answers for example...with your limited human understanding. And believe me, I know what that's like for those of us who are considered to be "thinking Christians" who generally read more than most people etc.But let me reiterate....I believe in some instances that it's a lot better to believe what were told in the Bible without trying to over think it with our limited understanding. That means there are times when we by faith can believe what seems to be contradictory in the Bible. But with God, there is nothing ever contradictory written in the Bible.Because He is in the eternal realm. He is from everlasting to everlasting. We are told....
For my thoughts are not your thoughts,
neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord.
For as the heavens are higher than the earth,
so are my ways higher than your ways
and my thoughts than your thoughts.
(Isaiah 55:8-9)
So even though we may never truly understand how verses that seem contrary to one another can both be true..we'll find when we finally arrive in Heaven that they are indeed both true.
So with that background, we can begin listing some of the verses that are relevant to your particular question:
And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation. “He who has believed and has been baptized shall be saved; but he who has disbelieved shall be condemned".
(Mark 16:15-16)
What shall we say then? Is there unrighteousness with God? May it never be! For he said to Moses, "I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion." So then it is not of him who wills, nor of him who runs, but of God who has mercy. For the Scripture says to Pharaoh, "For this very purpose I caused you to be raised up, that I might show in you my power, and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth." So then, he has mercy on whom he desires, and he hardens whom he desires.
(Romans 9:14-18)
The Spirit and the bride say, "Come!" And let the one who hears say, "Come!" Let the one who is thirsty come; and let the one who wishes take the free gift of the water of life.
(Revelation 22:17)
Those whose names were not found in the Book of Life were thrown into the fiery lake.
(Revelation 20:15)
“Now as for you, son of man, I have appointed you a watchman for the house of Israel; so you will hear a message from My mouth and give them warning from Me. “When I say to the wicked, ‘O wicked man, you will surely die,’ and you do not speak to warn the wicked from his way, that wicked man shall die in his iniquity, but his blood I will require from your hand. “But if you on your part warn a wicked man to turn from his way and he does not turn from his way, he will die in his iniquity, but you have delivered your life.
(Ezekiel 33:7-9)
For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor principalities, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
(Roman 8:38-39)
And this is the will of Him who sent Me, that I shall lose none of all those He has given Me, but raise them up at the last day.
(John 6:39)
And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.
(Hebrews 11:6)
No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up on the last day.
(John 6:44)
And he said, "This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted him by my Father"
(John 6:65)
And the results from people who didn't care for the fact that Jesus said this:
After this many of His disciples turned back and no longer walked with Him.
(John 6:66) (On a private note, I've alway's thought that this verse and chapter combination was rather provocative, especially considering the fact that it refers to those who turn from Jesus ..."666")
I'm not going to keep on listing verses that seem to be contrary to other verses found in God's written Word. So what is it that I'm trying to say? OK.What I'm saying is that we have two paths that we can choose at this junction. We can, like many atheists are doing these days, tell ourselves and others that the Bible doesn't seem to make any sense a lot of times. So therefore, they'll choose to disbelieve that Jesus Christ is the only way to be accepted by God.They'll gamble and take the chance that there isn't a Heaven for those who place their faith in Jesus Christ and His finished work on the cross at Calvary and that there is no place of punishment for those who reject God's gracious offer of salvation found in Jesus Christ. In other words, they'll choose to "throw out the baby with the bathwater" because God doesn't fit in with their human logic.OR..we can by faith simply believe that God truly loves people and desires that everybody be saved:
The Lord is not slow about his promise, as some people understand slowness, but is being patient with you. He does not want anyone to perish, but wants everyone to repent.
(2 Peter 3:9)
"Do you think that I like to see wicked people die? says the Sovereign LORD. Of course not! I want them to turn from their wicked ways and live.
(Ezekiel 18:23)
And we can do our part by being a witness and glorifying the Lord in all we do .. wherever we happen to find ourselves in life.Whether we are a student, or we work a 9-5 type job, or we're on some kind of professional sports team, or an entertainer, or a stay at home Mom, or extremely wealthy or homeless or wherever we happen to be at. And step out in faith and take those opportunities to share Jesus Christ with those who are lost.Does questioning where or not we are responsible for someone who ends up being separated from God and His love for all eternity bear any good fruit or help as far as what we should be thinking about ? We are told in the book of Philippians:
Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.
(Philippians 4:8)
Trust in the LORD with all your heart,
and do not lean on your own understanding.
In all your ways acknowledge him,
and he will make straight your paths.
Be not wise in your own eyes;
fear the LORD, and turn away from evil.
It will be healing to your flesh
and refreshment to your bones.
(Proverbs 3:5-8)
Cast all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you.
(1 Peter 5:8)
Rejoice in the Lord always and again I say rejoice!
(Philippians 4:4)
I hope this helps in some way.I realize that because of the fact that we are rather limited as far as space is concerned that in many instances our responses have to be condensed. May God bless you on your journey throughout your life.
Love in Christ Jesus,
