I don't know your own situation, so I don't want to offer too strong of an opinion - if I come off that way, I apologize, I don't mean to be presumptuous, these are just my thoughts. At the very least, I would think it would not be something to decide too quickly or rashly. Even those in religious orders (correct me if I'm completely confused on this) don't immediately take perpetual vows, right? Also, you say you are bisexual, so I'm wondering why it is you think your same-sex attraction would indicate a calling to celibacy (I'm not looking for you to answer that question here, just offering my thoughts given what you've said).

Thank you for your thoughts. My whole sexual attraction is rather fluid, but I have zero desire to date people. :p

I respect people greatly who feel called to such a vow. And evenmoreso those that honestly feel capable of such a daunting position - that is something I truly do not feel capable of. I pray for you to have the strength to uphold your vow.

I've never felt that strong-willed. In fact, given my knowledge of myself, I daresay I am honestly NOT that strong. Thank the Lord for His grace.
And, wrong as it may be (I admit my shortcomings and sins in the matter), I dedicate myself to my partner [sexually and romantically] and no one else.

You'll probably get over it then. Date some nice women.

I don't mean to be rude or anything, but if you don't have any desire for sex, then wouldn't that make you asexual rather than bisexual? In that case, a vow of celibacy would be very easy for you.

Personally, I think celibacy needs to make a comeback and become popular again in Christian communities. :)

No, I am not asexual by any means. The romantic and physical attraction is still there.

I agree with you.

So you're saying that you have physical and romantic attractions, but you've sort of accepted celibacy?

Wow! That's amazing! I don't know how much you know about neuroplasticity or erotic plasticity, but from what I've heard about the subject people CAN, to some degree, shape their brains to think what they want (it's tough, of course, but entirely Biblical--and certainly blows the whole "born gay/it's permanent" thing right out of the water!).

Erotic plasticity is sort of a subset of this. You can't necessarily ALWAYS "change" your sexual orientation, but sexual orientations are somewhat fluid in some people. Not that you're straight one day and then just think really hard and you turn gay, but just in the sense that sexuality exists on a fluid continuum rather than a spectrum. Scientists seem to understand this and yet they have this double-think about it when it comes to gay people, but I digress and DO NOT WISH TO DEBATE THE TOPIC HERE.

My point is, I heard that vows of celibacy work. You always here about abstinence failing, but you don't hear about how all those monks and nuns suddenly gave in to sexual temptation. That's simply because they sort of trained their brains to not really care.

Evidently, you've either done or are doing the same thing. In a sex-saturated culture, that's amazing!

I am just curious on how common this is? For example not in a religious order or priesthood etc.

How many saints that did this?

If you swear an oath and fail, you will come under condemnation.
Let what you say be simply 'Yes' or 'No'

James 5:12
12 But above all, my brethren, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or with any other oath, but let your yes be yes and your no be no, that you may not fall under condemnation.

Mat 5:33-37
33 “Again you have heard that it was said to the men of old, ‘You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform to the Lord what you have sworn.’ 34 But I say to you, Do not swear at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God, 35 or by the earth, for it is his footstool, or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. 36 And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black. 37 Let what you say be simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’
