To be prayerless is to be without God, without Christ, without grace, without hope, and without heaven. It is to be on the road to hell. Now can you wonder that I ask the question, Do you pray?

I ask again whether you pray, because a habit of prayer is one of the surest marks of a true Christian.

All the children of God on earth are alike in this respect. From the moment there is any life and reality about their religion, they pray. Just as the first sign of life in an infant when born into the world is the act of breathing, so the first act of men and women when they are born again is praying.

This is one of the common marks of all the elect of God, "They cry unto him day and night" (Luke:18:1 And he spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint. The Holy Spirit, who makes them new creatures, works in them the feeling of adoption, and makes them cry, "Abba, Father"
(Rom:8:15 For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.).

The Lord Jesus, when he quickens them, gives them a voice and a tongue, and says to them, "Be dumb [speechless] no more." God has no dumb children. It is as much a part of their new nature to pray, as it is of a child to cry. They see their need of mercy and grace. They feel their emptiness and weakness. They can not do otherwise than they do. They must pray.
I have looked carefully over the lives of God's saints in the Bible. I cannot find one of whose history much is told us, from Genesis to Revelation, who was not a man of prayer.

I find it mentioned as a characteristic of the godly, that "they call on the Father" (1 Peter:1:17 And if ye call on the Father, who without respect of persons judgeth according to every man's work, pass the time of your sojourning here in fear, or "the name of the Lord Jesus Christ"

(1 Cor:1:2 Unto the church of God which is at Corinth, to them that are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, with all that in every place call upon the name of Jesus Christ our LORD, both theirs and ours

Recorded as a characteristic of the wicked is the fact that "they call not upon the Lord" (Ps:14:4Have all the workers of iniquity no knowledge? who eat up my people as they eat bread, and call not upon the LORD.).

I pray often and for many reasons. Sometimes it is for a sick or hurting friend. When my daughter has to work I pray for her protection on her 2 hour commute. I pray for my son at college and my husband as he works.
Sometimes my prayers are more a crying on God's shoulder over things that are (or are not) happening in my life.
And many times my prayers are more contemplative as I work with my yarn and hook - quietly working and listening and thinking. If I am working on a prayer shawl or baby blanket I will pray for and think about the person it is for as I work.

And if someone is uncomfortable with prayer?

I would encourage the person to keep at it. I was uncomfortable at one time but kept at it, asking God to help me and now it is as natural as breathing.

Some things to keep in mind - prayer is just talking with God. One doesn't have to have fancy words or a certain posture.

It also doesn't have to be out loud or in public.
There are also many books with advice on how to develop a habit of prayer. Often, if my mind seems to be flying in umpteen directions I will use an Anglican rosary to help center myself. I usually find that it helps to quiet my mind and bring real concerns to the forefront. Like anything else - prayer takes patience and practice.

Reading a book on developing a habit of prayer is like reading a book on how to like broccoli. You simply do it, begin to see the effects of it, and over time, develop a taste for it. One day, you wonder why you ever did not like it.

But, it has to start with "just do it."

.

Thats it...dear lady. 'crying unto Him'

Psalm 61:2 "hear my cry O God..........

He was a 'King' Of a mighty nation......ect
He was a Jew........ect.
But when he says hear my cry. Thats the point we can join in. The cry of a man.....seeking help from his God.

The cry of those who have no hope
.....................................no future

'This poor man cried'..........That is all it takes to make contact with the 'LOrd God Almighty'

Some people need a little guidance on how to do anything - including how to fix broccoli so they may enjoy it. Books are a starting point, not the destination.
