Archaeologists in Spain say they have found one of the world's earliest known images of Jesus. It is engraved on a glass plate dating back to the 4th Century AD, reports from Spain say.

The plate is believed to have been used to hold Eucharistic bread as it was consecrated in early Christian rituals. It measures 22cm in diameter and fragments of it were unearthed outside the southern Spanish city of Linares, ABC newspaper reports.

I wonder if Jesus really did look like that. Maybe he looked like the average Jew did back during that time with short hair, no beard, nothing to make him unique or stand out with other Jews. Which is why his own people did not recognise him. He defiantly didn’t look like how the later images portrayed him.

Isaiah 53:2 (NIV): "He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him, nothing in his appearance that we should desire him

Interesting, although I doubt this is what Christ looked like. The 4th century was a time when ecumenism was innately booming. Christ would have been modeled by respective leaders of the region (not replicated, but modeled.)

Christ most likely looked like other Hebrews of the time: tanned or dark, with curly hair and dark eyes. Rome was like West (or should I say the reverse:.) melting pot with protectorate in different continents. So, a Hebrew was most likely known by physical features and style of dress/way of life, since there existed converted non-genetic (Hebrew) Pharisees. It would be like recognizing a Muslim male by the clothes he is wearing, and his hair features - despite hue.

Saying they have found and saying they believe they have found are not the same thing. The latter was stated, not the former. Archaeologists would not make a definitive statement - unless things have drastically changed in the field from the time I received my undergraduate degree.

As far as anyone is aware, this is the earliest known depiction of Christ (Dura Europos, Syria circa 235 A.D.).
