Someone on another board claimed that because St. Paul quoted the Greek poet Aratus that should make Aratus "canon" if Enoch is, because Jude quoted him.
I replied:
Paul did not call the Greek Poet a prophet of God and quote the prophecy in part. Paul clarified:"one of your own poets said". There was never any confusion that the poet was not being called a prophet of God, whom Paul quoted from to prove a point. But with Jude [who is a womb brother of Jesus Christ], there was never any confusion that Enoch, the seventh from Adam, was a prophet of God and there is full confidence by Jude that Enoch the prophet's prophecy, which Jude quoted from, will be fulfilled.
Enoch was never banned by the Ethiopian Church, and Enoch was never lost to them from the beginning of the NT Church in Ethiopia, and 1 Enoch is on the list/canon in their Bible/collection of books, of sacred writings/scripture.
Two copies of Enoch were brought from Ethiopia in the late 1700's, to England, and translated to English in the early 1800's.
Many copies of Enoch were discovered in the Qumran Caves in the 1940's, and those copies of copies of Enoch were dated by carbon dating to the third century BC -but they were only copies of copies, and copies of copies which go back, all the way to Enoch, the prophet, the seventh from Adam.
The Qumran Cave Enoch manuscripts do not include the chapters on the Son of Man, but that does not mean they were not extant, nor that they will not be discovered in those manuscripts which are yet to be opened and translated; and those chapters are validated by what is in the rest of 1 Enoch, anyway, and by what is in the NT. Even the passage from Jude validates that section, because the "blackness of darkness forever" comment made by Jude is also from that portion on the Son of Man in heaven, as sole judge and LORD of Glory, before whom all the Watchers and unrepentant sinners bow the knee to and confess as the Great LORD of Glory.
Paul also validates that portion of Enoch which Jude does, for he says it is Jesus Christ to whom every knee will bow and tongue confess. That is not information from the OT passage in Isaiah, but is information from Enoch, validated in Isaiah, that it is YHWH [the Son of Man who is God the Word] before whom every knee will bow and every tongue will confess.
In the passage in Isaiah, YHWH says that he has sworn it [before]... that to Him every knee will bow and every tongue will confess; and it is written before only in Enoch; and in Enoch, it is the Son of Man who is the One on the throne before whom all confess and bow and to whom "the sum of all judgment is committed" by the Father.
The Son of Man in heaven is sole judge, in Enoch, and is the Great Glory before whom all will bow and confess.
Isaiah 45:23 I have sworn by Myself; The word has gone out of My mouth in righteousness, And shall not return, That to Me every knee shall bow, Every tongue shall take an oath.
Rom 14:10-12
But why do you judge your brother? Or why do you show contempt for your brother? For we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ.
For it is written:
"As I live, says the LORD,
Every knee shall bow to Me,
And every tongue shall confess to God."
So then each of us shall give account of himself to God.
Phl 2:10-11 Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Now the passages in Enoch come first, to establish the foundation doctrine of the Son of Man as God the Word, who, in Enoch, is hidden in and is with the LORD of Glory in heaven, and who is the LORD of Glory and God the Word, seen as the mystery by Enoch.
Enoch 48:...The Book of Enoch
2 And at that hour that Son of Man was named In the presence of the Lord of Spirits,
And his name before the Head of Days.
3 Yea, before the sun and the signs were created,
Before the stars of the heaven were made,
His name was named before the Lord of Spirits.
4 He shall be a staff to the righteous whereon to stay themselves and not fall,
And he shall be the light of the Gentiles,
And the hope of those who are troubled of heart.
5 All who dwell on earth shall fall down and worship before him,
And will praise and bless and celebrate with song the Lord of Spirits.
6 And for this reason hath he been chosen and hidden before Him,
Before the creation of the world and for evermore.
7 And the wisdom of the Lord of Spirits hath revealed him to the holy and righteous;
For he hath preserved the lot of the righteous,
Because they have hated and despised this world of unrighteousness,
And have hated all its works and ways in the name of the Lord of Spirits:
For in his name they are saved,
And according to his good pleasure hath it been in regard to their life.
Enoch Chapter 63
1 In those days shall the mighty and the kings who possess the earth implore (Him) to grant them a little respite from His angels of punishment to whom they were delivered, that they might fall 2 down and worship before the Lord of Spirits, and confess their sins before Him. And they shall bless and glorify the Lord of Spirits, and say:
' Blessed is the Lord of Spirits and the Lord of kings,
And the Lord of the mighty and the Lord of the rich,
And the Lord of glory and the Lord of wisdom,
3 And splendid in every secret thing is Thy power from generation to generation,
And Thy glory for ever and ever:
Deep are all Thy secrets and innumerable,
And Thy righteousness is beyond reckoning.
4 We have now learnt that we should glorify
And bless the Lord of kings and Him who is king over all kings.'
5 And they shall say:
' Would that we had rest to glorify and give thanks
And confess our faith before His glory !
6 And now we long for a little rest but find it not:
We follow hard upon and obtain (it) not:
And light has vanished from before us,
And darkness is our dwelling-place for ever and ever:
7 For we have not believed before Him
Nor glorified the name of the Lord of Spirits, [nor glorified our Lord]
But our hope was in the sceptre of our kingdom,
And in our glory.
8 And in the day of our suffering and tribulation He saves us not,
And we find no respite for confession
That our Lord is true in all His works, and in His judgements and His justice,
And His judgements have no respect of persons.
And we pass away from before His face on account of our works,
And all our sins are reckoned up in righteousness.'
10 Now they shall say unto themselves: ' Our souls are full of unrighteous gain, but it does not prevent us from descending from the midst thereof into the burden of Sheol.'
11 And after that their faces shall be filled with darkness
And shame before that Son of Man,
And they shall be driven from his presence,
And the sword shall abide before his face in their midst.
12 Thus spake the Lord of Spirits: ' This is the ordinance and judgement with respect to the mighty and the kings and the exalted and those who possess the earth before the Lord of Spirits.'
Jud 1:14 Now Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied about these men also, saying, "Behold, the Lord comes with ten thousands of His saints,
Jud 1:15 "to execute judgment on all, to convict all who are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have committed in an ungodly way, and of all the harsh things which ungodly sinners have spoken against Him."
