  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Are you speaking about Aseret ha dibrot?

The 'Ten Commandments' is not found in the Bible, at least not in the original. What it says is Aseret ha-D'varim.

You can read more about it here.

Interesting as I have never seen this page before but was given the same understanding which caused me years ago to compile this chart based on what Yeshua said.

Yeshua taught this

Master, which is the great commandment in the law? Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. -- This is the first and great commandment.
And the second is like unto it
Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

This is called the law of love, of loving G-d and fellow man but he didn't say it ended there, he said that all the commandments came off one or the other of these two. So to be able to Love G-d and Love your Neighbor you must follow these other commandments.

Thank you Lulav the article answered my question

While we are on the subject of the ten...Is there any way that these ten can be seen as the same no matter which side of the stone you view it from. I heard that the words were cut clean through the stone and could be viewed from either side of it.
Exodus 32:15 And Moses turned, and went down from the mountain with the two tables of the testimony in his hands, tables that were written on both sides; on the one side and on the other were they written.

I have read the Ten Commandments, but have never seen it shortened into ten words... so where did this term come from?

For some people there are 12 Commandments - arrived at by splitting two of the 10. But, generally speaking, most people accept that are 10.

Welcome! :)

I think it is found in the Talmud that some believed that the tablets were not granite as we see portrayed, but rather clear. Also that certain Hebrew letters like Samach which looks like an 'o' and thus would have no bridge to the rest of the tablet, hung mysteriously in place.

I rather think that paleo Hebrew was used and I can't recall any of those letters being like that.

Some believe it was made from a sapphire stone, like the floor in the throne room of HaShem. This may have been the first 'set' that shattered. These where supposed to have been cut out by G-d himself.
And they saw the God of Israel: and there was under his feet as it were a paved work of a sapphire stone, and as it were the body of heaven in his clearness.
The second 'set' Moses cut out a 'tablet' was probably of the stone found on the mountain. So the first was heavenly and the second was earthly. It would have been carved on one side this time.

The Hebrew word used is 'eben' which could mean a precious stone or an ordinary one.

It is interesting to note that the L-RD gave him these first tablets was right after he was reiterating about the Sabbath.
It is a sign between me and the children of Israel for ever: for in six days the L-RD made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day he rested , and was refreshed . 18 And he gave unto Moses, when he had made an end of communing with him upon mount Sinai, two tables of testimony, tables of stone, written with the finger of God.
Also of note, the verse right after the one you posted says:

16 And the tables were the work of God, and the writing was the writing of God, graven upon the tables.
Tie those two together with this verse from Genesis 2

And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made ; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made . 3 And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made
Could it be possible that the last work he did before the seventh day was to write these commandments down?

Even though the Bible does not say they are Ten Commandments, it does specify TEN , that is the meaning of Aseret from Aseret ha-D'varim
עֲשֶׂרֶת, הַדְּבָרִים

And he was there with the L-RD forty days and forty nights; he did neither eat bread, nor drink water. And he wrote upon the tables the words of the covenant, the ten words.
As you know the book we call D'varim called Deuteronomy is taken from the first words of that book, which say, these are the words which Moses spoke...............

עֲשֶׂרֶת = Aseret which means TEN
