Just for the record ... to set it straight early. Newt Gingrich - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Newton Leroy "Newt" Gingrich (
11px-Loudspeaker.svg.png
/ˈnuːt ˈɡɪŋɡrɪtʃ/; born Newton Leroy McPherson; June 17, 1943) is an American politician who served as the 58th
Speaker of the United States House of Representatives from 1995 to 1999. He represented Georgia's 6th congressional district as a Republican member from 1979 to 1999.
Gingrich was born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, but raised in Hummelstown, a small nearby borough. A college professor, historian, and author, Gingrich twice ran unsuccessfully for the House before winning a seat in the election of November 1978. He was re-elected ten times, and his activism as a member of the House's Republican minority eventually enabled him to succeed Dick Cheney as House Minority Whip in 1989.
As a co-author of the 1994 Contract with America, Gingrich was in the forefront of the Republican Party's dramatic success in that year's Congressional elections and subsequently was elected Speaker of the House. In 1995, Time magazine named him "Man of the Year" for his role in leading the Republican Revolution in the House, ending 40 years of the Democratic Party being in the majority. During his tenure as Speaker, he represented the public face of the Republican opposition to PresidentBill Clinton. Under his Speakership, Congress passed and Clinton signed the 1996 reform of welfare, a capital gains tax cut and the first balanced budget since 1969.
Following Republican losses in the 1998 mid-term elections, Gingrich resigned both his Speakership and his congressional seat. Since resigning his seat, Gingrich has maintained a career as a political analyst and consultant. He continues to write works related to government and other subjects, such as historical fiction, and is the author of twenty-three books. He is the founder and/or chair of several organizations and companies, including American Solutions for Winning the Future, Center for Health Transformation, Gingrich Productions and Renewing American Leadership. In May 2011, he announced he will seek the Republican nomination to run in the 2012 presidential election.
And some personal aspects ...
Gingrich has been married three times. In 1962, he married Jackie Battley, his former high school geometry teacher, when he was 19 years old and she was 26.[114][115] In the spring of 1980, Gingrich left Battley after having an affair with Marianne Ginther.[116][117] In 1984, Battley told the Washington Post that the divorce was a "complete surprise" to her. According to Battley, in September 1980, Gingrich and their children visited her while she was in the hospital, recovering from surgery, and Gingrich wanted to discuss the terms of their divorce.[118] Gingrich has disputed that account.[91] In 2011, their daughter, Jackie Gingrich Cushman, said that it was her mother who requested the divorce, that it happened prior to the hospital stay (which was for the removal of a benign tumor, not cancer), and that Gingrich's visit was for the purpose of bringing the couple's children to see their mother, not to discuss the divorce.[119] Gingrich has two daughters from his first marriage. Kathy Gingrich Lubbers is president of Gingrich Communications,[120] and Jackie Gingrich Cushman is an author, conservative columnist, and political commentator[121] whose books include 5 Principles for a Successful Life, co-authored with Newt Gingrich.[122]
Six months after the divorce from Battley was final, Gingrich wed Marianne Ginther in 1981.[123][124][125][126] In the mid-1990s, Gingrich began an affair with House of Representatives staffer Callista Bisek, who is 23 years his junior. They continued their affair during the Lewinsky scandal, when Gingrich became a leader of the Republican investigation of President Clinton for perjury and obstruction of justice in connection with his alleged affairs.[127] In 2000, Gingrich married Bisek shortly after his divorce from second wife Ginther. He and Callista currently live in McLean, Virginia.[128] In a 2011 interview with David Brody of the Christian Broadcasting Network Gingrich addressed his past infidelities by saying, "There's no question at times in my life, partially driven by how passionately I felt about this country, that I worked too hard and things happened in my life that were not appropriate."

The one thing Obama does not want is to face Gingrich in a debate. My guess is that if Gingrich is the nominee, Obama will try to weasel out of the debates

I agree, Gingrich is easily the best public speaker/debater of the current nominees. However I believe his time has passed, I don't see him gaining any extra momentum from anything other than all the other candidates imploding. Where would the large amount of support he still needs come from?

Newt is the only person running who has any experience balancing a federal budget

Newt Gingrich is the only one that can articulate the the problems and solutions for 100% of Americans. He's the only one that can win in any debate with the progressive liberal think tank that supports Obama...... So we agree;)

I'm just wondering if it's too slow though. Romney's been at at least second place for the entire race so far, and Cain's been up there for what's turning into an impressive amount of time as well. It seems that both of them would have to make some major gaffes to provide Newt with enough support to win the nomination in time.

In an ideal world this would be a huge advantage for him, maybe even give him the golden ticket to the top of the polls at a time like this. Unfortunately public opinion is for the most part governed by what we see on TV, and what we see on TV tends to be the mistakes the candidates make rather than the strengths they may have. The end result being that we never hear about the candidates that don't make the mistakes and they fall out of the minds of voters.

To me it seems the key would be to find a balance in which you make enough mistakes to stay in the public eye but not as many as the other guys.

It's still way early to be trying to predict who the nominee is going to be. First ... consider that Romney didn't do well in Iowa in 2008. Second ... consider that Romney abandoned Iowa's earlier straw poll. Third ... consider that the "solid base" of support for Romney, which the media has been droning on about for months now, is only two-thirds the size it was earlier.

It's way early ... :preach:Micah 4:12
But they know not the thoughts of the LORD, neither understand they his counsel: for he shall gather them as the sheaves into the floor. Arise and thresh, O daughter of Zion: for I will make thine horn iron, and I will make thy hoofs brass: and thou shalt beat in pieces many people: and I will consecrate their gain unto the LORD, and their substance unto the Lord of the whole earth.
Tonight's debate on National Security and Foreign Policy could be especially interesting given some of Cain's prior remarks.

I really don't think that's true any more. More and more the debate is influenced by rational thinking. That may have started with the TEA party, but in the last debate the audience took out much of the "moderator" bias when they showed loud disdain for "character assassination" questions. The "moderators" reluctantly moved on ...

In prior debates as well, the audience has enthusiastically supported Newt every time he laid into the "moderators".

When CNN hosted the TEA party debate, poor Wolf Blister looked so forlorn when his restricted line of questioning was blown wide open by the occasional TEA party question.

The end result being that we never hear about the candidates that don't make the mistakes and they fall out of the minds of voters.

It is paradoxical, isn't it?

Consider this though. For too many years, the media has camouflaged mistakes by the "establishment" candidates, while focusing on mistakes made by outsiders. It seems that those days are over. The mis-begotten zeal to destroy is working against the media in surprising ways now and they've displayed no ability to combat it. Again and again, the media simply doubles down on stupid ... much to their chagrin. I predict that pattern will continue for a while.

Isn't it great?

I wasn't too impressed with his last debate peformance, he come off as a bully and a bit of an ass with the way he picks fights with the moderators. That might win him points in the primaries but in a general election debate it looks un-presidential and would be a contrast with Obama.

Are you talking about the same Obama who has singled out certain media personalities and outlets by name and "demonized" them publicly?

If you're refering to the "fair and balanced" crew over at fox news I would point out that Obama has done interviews with fox news reporters, answers their questions at press conferences, they even gave fox news' WH reporter a seat in the front row of the briefing room. Far more classier treatment than what Newt did with Maria Bartolomo during the debate.

I guess you missed some of the things he has said about Fox and some individuals. And I hardly found anything classless about Newt's comments in the debate.

hehehe ... bet you loved the debate tonight. The CBS and National Journal moderators were especially rude tonight. Mitt laid 'em on the carpet several times.

I'm warming up to Newt. He doesn't tolerate nonsense in place of reason. The moderators interjected their own "liberal" morality a few times ... and they were rebuked by the candidates almost every time. Newt, especially, rebuked the moderator about the "civil rights" of American citizens who are fighting as combatants in a war against the United States.
