ok, i've spoken on here before about the fundamentalist KJV-only guy that occasionally pushes my buttons - well, he's done it again.....

he has basically come out and said that it is wrong for a man of the cloth to be called "reverend" - that only Jesus should be called Reverend, as He is the only one who should be revered.....

basically, that those who call themselves "reverend" are not good shepherds....

i tried on several occasions to get him to clarify, but he would not, and has since removed the thread.....

interested in hearing what y'all have to say about this.....

First off, "Reverend", when used in association with the clergy, is a title not a verb.

Biblically, the word is used to denote honor and respect. While we do indeed honor and respect God above all things as we are taught to do in the 1st Commandment, we are also to honor and respect those whom God has called to serve him in the capacity that Christ has instituted in His Church. In Hebrew, it's the word 'yare' (pronounced yar-ay) and in Greek it's 'phobos'. While both words can mean 'to fear' in certain contexts, in a positive sense they mean to honor and respect anyone in a position of authority, such as parents.

Suggest we call him "Father." (In Europe, Lutherans often do). THAT should set him off....

Well if his response when asked to clarify his position is to ignore you and remove the thread, that should tell you all you need to know. He's best put on ignore.

Is there anyone in the KJV only crowd that can actually read greek and hebrew in order to make a legitimate argument that the KJV is the most accurate translation?

I don't know, but as, I believe it's the Baptists, always say:

"If the King James Version was good enough for Jesus and the Apostles it should be good enough for you!" ^_^

Why, here in Finland we don't call 'em pastors "Reverend" like ... ever. ;)
We don't call our Lord Jesus Christ "Reverend" either: we call Him Herra, Vapahtaja, Kristus, Jumalan Poika, Karitsa... I should like to know what this anti-Reverend fundie-KJV poster has to say about that!

Our clergy goes by the specific title of their office: (parish) Pastor, Chaplain/second pastor, Vicar, Bishop, Archbishop, Dean, County Dean, Chaplain General. They are all ordained priests/präst/pappi.
