My husband and I were in missions for quite a while straight out of high school, we meet on the field, were married, and left the field after a few years. Since coming 'home' we have been training in different careers, I got a university degree and my husband has a AA degree. However none of us have been able to get into any kind of proper career. I have only been able to find a low paying job in retail and my husband does some freelancing work every now and then. We have tried EVERYTHING to get into our proper careers and every door has stayed closed. You can not imagine how many jobs we have applied for (literally hundreds). This has been going on for 7 years, we are in our late 30's. I am really beginning to lose hope. We have of course prayed and prayed and prayed, have had people pray for us, tried to find us work etc, but still nothing. I am confused as to what God is doing (or not doing). We have children, I am sick of living hand to mouth.

I understand how you feel as i have 2 children of my own and know the stresses of day to day living. Also God is your provider so if something is not seeming right and for 7 years now hasnt been then maybe you are not in the right 'home'. Maybe God wants you to return again into ministry, or maybe you are learning a real test of patience and persistance amongst other things. But God is for you and with you, and from the sounds of it you are a hard worker. In the story of Ruth, when there was famine in their land, they left and moved to another country, one that worshipped satan basically, and he provided for them...bad things still happened though as comes with the territory, but when it was time for them to move back they had nothing. God came through for them as the Kinsman Redeemer. My point by that is just that sometimes we relocate for times to avoid something worse or who knows Gods plans, but maybe its time to move again. Just a thought, God bless and i hope you get some peace through these times. :hugs:

Your situation is hard indeed. A recession, and later qualifications with possible little work experience for an older person will present difficulties. Employers will be more likely to employ a younger (and possibly cheaper) person. Plus, some may not look favourably at your missions experience, unless you can present that to show some useful work related skills, experience that could benefit the employer in the job.

If God commanded us to work, would he not provide work for us, or even create work place for us, not just because he loves us and cares for us, but also because he has commanded us to work?

We are more important to God than food, jobs, money, clothes, or else, because we are his children, created in his image. Therefore, He will not withhold food, clothes, jobs for us, just because we matter to him more, than all those things together - Matthew 6:25

River,

That is a difficult place. You've been faithful to serve, I can't help but think that the Lord has a wonderful plan for you guys. I know it's hard, but I pray your faith fails not in this crucible of testing you are in, that God makes the way forward apparent and leads you into the perfect situation for both of you to continue your service to Him.

Blessings,
Paul

There are a lot of people who had their education and their years of traditional work experience when you were in the missions field who are in the exact same place right now. I've spent my share of time without work, and I can tell you it's like Russian roulette - eventually, you will get a different result if you just keep at it.
Plus, some may not look favourably at your missions experience, unless you can present that to show some useful work related skills, experience that could benefit the employer in the job.
That can be done - if it can be done for former stay-at-home moms, it can be done for former foreign missionaries. You just need to know how to describe your experiences and how they relate to the job at hand - what skills and qualities you've built, how you've learned and grown to be the kind of person they're looking for.
