The thing that amazes me is after all this counseling that is supposedly taking place, after hearing everyone confess their sins that is supposedly taking place and so on, that the priests perform all these marriages that only years later does it come out that there were all these problems that were so serious that they precluded an actual marriage from taking place.

Either the priests are totally oblivious as they are marrying people, or they know but marry them anyway, or the annulment process is just a bunch of lies. I've tried to reason it through but can't make anything else fit.

All of the above? :p

Seriously though what do you expect from a Church where secrecy and cover-up has been the norm since the Reformation? Remember the confessions say the pope of Rome is the Antichrist (not a specific person).

Rome is full of lies, hypocrisy, and commandments of men.

"He answered and said unto them, Well hath Esaias prophesied of you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me. Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctines the commandments of men." - Mark 7:6-7.
