hey,

why does it seem like you post the most at night?

Isn't it passed mid-night for you?

To answer your question BFP-no not birthdays, other things, like listening to music, or smelling something that reminds me of someone, or some place I loved.

I was too self-centered as a child for my birthdays to be remembered fondly, and I haven't had a notable birthday in about 10 years at least. My best memories are all associated with other events, like picnics and camping trips and a couple weddings. But even more with places and music. I had favorite places as a child, and it didn't matter what we were doing there; I was having a blast. And there were two songs that I associate with my favorite of those places.

Pachabel's Canon makes me nostalgic because I associate it with a farm belonging to a former member of our church (they moved and had to sell the farm). It's where I learned to swim, shoot a rifle, sled, play pool, and hike. It was the biggest piece of land owned by anyone in our church, so we had a lot of activities, sometimes even outdoor services, there. Once we had a wedding there. I didn't really understand the ceremony; I was only like 4 at the time. But I remember my mom playing the melody on flute accompanied on piano and guitar, and realizing for the first time that music could be beautiful as well as just fun.

Then the other one: I don't remember exactly what the day was about, but there was swimming and a hiking trip, and an epic game of hide-and-seek among the little kids. I remember that as the sun was going down, it was a little bit chilly so everyone was getting out of the pool. I saw my first shooting star that night, sitting on a fence and leaning against my dad's shoulder.

One of the children in my church had one of those wind up toy music boxes, and it played Somewhere Over the Rainbow. Just as the sun set behind us, I heard it playing near the farmhouse. It was one of those times that you just don't get anymore as an adult: I had no responsibilities, barely any concept of trouble at all. It was a gorgeous night. All those feelings; the innocence of youth, the exhaustion at the end of a day well-spent, perfect contentment. The smell of a campfire and roasting marshmallows, the last redness of a sunset in the West, and as the song played - a brilliant streak of light in the eastern sky. I didn't know anything about meteorites so I asked my dad what it was. He told me about rocks from space burning up in the planet's atmosphere, and then wonder was added to the day's emotions.

I didn't see The Wizard of Oz until I was like 10, but I knew that tune very well after that night because I hummed it all the way home. All the emotions and memories from that day and that place were wrapped up with it. Whenever I hear that song these days, the nostalgia is sometimes so intense that it is almost painful. I know I can't bring back the perfection of that day, but if I could buy that farm I would. In fact I think I'll see if I can when I get enough money to do that.

I sort of hope/believe that I will live in a place exactly like that in the next world. Only better, of course; because as C.S. Lewis wrote, all the beauty in this world is only a tiny bit of God's glory shining through.

Actually, I don't really think I had a bout of nostalgia until about a year ago when someone mentioned they were remaking 21 Jump Street into a movie. In high school I had a little color portable TV I brought along on road games during football season. I could only get one channel and they used to air reruns of it on Saturday nights.
Then I watched a few episodes on Netflix and thought to myself: "this is the show that launched the Fox network, wow people had lax standards in the late 80's."
