vain, profane, and foolish babblings

Paul said some religious discussions are not only profitless but enable strife and division.

1 Timothy 1:3-7
warning against false doctrine

As I besought thee to abide still at Ephesus,
when I went into Macedonia, that thou might-
est charge some that they teach no other doc-
trine,
Neither give heed to fables and endless gene-
ologies, which minister questions, rather than
edifying which is in faith: so do.
Now the end of the commandment is charity
out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience,
and of faith unfeigned:
From which some having swerved have turned
aside unto vain jangling;
Desiring to be teachers of the law; understand-
ing neither what they say, nor whereof they af-
firm.

1 Timothy 4:7
a good minister of Jesus Christ

But refuse profane and old wives' fables, and
exercise thyself rather unto godliness.

1 Timothy 6:3-5
warning against false teachers

If any man teach otherwise, and consent not
to wholesome words, even the words of our
Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which
is according to godliness;
He is proud, knowing nothing, but doting about
questions and strifes of words, whereof com-
eth envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings,
Preverse disputings of men of corrupt minds,
and destitute of the truth, supposing the gain is
godliness: from such withdraw thyself.

1 Timothy 6:20,21
the good fight of faith

O Timothy keep that which is commited to thy
trust, avoiding profane and vain babblings, and
oppositions of science falsely called so:
While some professing have erred concerning
faith. Grace be with thee. Amen.

2 Timothy 2:15-17
advice on personal conduct and relationships

Study to show thyself approved unto God, a
workman that needeth not to be ashamed, right-
ly dividing the word of truth.
But shun profane and vain babblings: for they
will increase unto more ungodliness.
And their word will eat as does a canker: of
whom is Hymeneus and Philetus;

2 Timothy 2:23-26

But foolish and unlearned questions avoid, knowing
that they do gender strifes.
And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be
gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient.
In meekness instructing those who oppose them-
selves; if God preadventure will give them repent-
ence to the acknowledging of the truth;
And that they may recover themselves out of the
snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at
his will.

2 Timothy 4:3,4
the charge to preach

For the time will come when they will not en-
dure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts
shall they heap to themselves teachers, hav-
ing itching ears'
And they shall turn away their ears from the
truth, and shall be turned unto fables.
But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions,
do the work of an evangelsit, make full proof
of thy ministry.

Titus 1:10-15
warning against false teachers

For their are many unruly and vain talkers and
deceivers, specially they of the circumcision:
Whose mouths must be stopped, who subvert
whole houses, teaching things which they ought
not, for filthy lucre's sake.
One of themselves, a prophet of their own, said,
The Cretians are always liars, evil beasts, slow
bellies.
This witness is true. Wherefore rebuke them
sharply, that they may be sound in faith;
Not giving heed to jewish fables, and command-
ments of men, that turn from the truth.
Unto the pure all things are pure: but unto them
that are defiled and unbelieving is nothing pure;
but even their mind and conscience is defiled.

Titus 3:9-11
the discipline of factious men

But avoid foolish questions, and geneologies, and
contentions, and strivings about the law; for they
are unprofitable and vain.
A man that is a heretic after the first and second
admonition reject;
Knowing that he that is such is subverted, and sin-
neth, being condemned of himself.

Good stuff. Have you considered these in light of what Paul said here:

1Co 2:1 And when I came to you, brethren, I did not come with superiority of speech or of wisdom, proclaiming to you the testimony of God.
1Co 2:2 For I determined to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ, and Him crucified.
1Co 2:3 I was with you in weakness and in fear and in much trembling,
1Co 2:4 and my message and my preaching were not in persuasive words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power,
1Co 2:5 so that your faith would not rest on the wisdom of men, but on the power of God. (NASB....emphasis mine)

Jesus says that we will know when He speaks to us (We will know him).

I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me
John 10:14

I Have other sheep that are not of this sheep pen. I must bring them also. They too will listen to my voice, and there shall be one flock and one shepherd.
John 10:16

My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.
John 10:27

Here God uses a Donky to speak because Baalam would not listen to God's voice.

But he was rebuked for his wrongdoing by a donkey—a beast without speech—who spoke with a man's voice and restrained the prophet's madness.
2 Peter 2:16

God uses the Holy Spirit to speak to us

So, as the Holy Spirit says: "Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as you did in the rebellion during the time of testing in the desert.
Hebrews 3:7-8

As has just been said: "Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as you did in the rebellion".
Hebrews 3:15

There are many voices out there that are trying to be heard, and will go to great lengths to do so.

Undoubtedly there are all sorts of languages in the world, yet none of them is without meaning.
1 Corinthians 14:10

wisdom vs foolishness reminds me of this Psalm I preached on not long ago

Psa 1:1 How blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked, Nor stand in the path of sinners, Nor sit in the seat of scoffers!
Psa 1:2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD, And in His law he meditates day and night.
Psa 1:3 He will be like a tree firmly planted by streams of water, Which yields its fruit in its season And its leaf does not wither; And in whatever he does, he prospers.
Psa 1:4 The wicked are not so, But they are like chaff which the wind drives away.
Psa 1:5 Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, Nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous.
Psa 1:6 For the LORD knows the way of the righteous, But the way of the wicked will perish. (NASB)

great sermon material! ... I really like reading the wise/foolish contrasts ... certainly puts things into perspective

Here's another

Proverb 12:23

but the heart of fools proclaimeth fool-
ishness.

:) Thank you for the smile! I don't know about an annointing but I sure love the Word!!

I know you do love the Word of God. The people at Azusa Street loved the Word as well – that was as much a key to why they experienced the power of God as anything. It seems astonishing to me, that people now-a-days really do not understand the extreme power that can be found in the Word. It's heart breaking really. But they like their secular studies and they like what the popular preachers say – and in the latter case, that is supposed to be based on the Word anyway. But really going deep into the Word, that is an experience, just as much as knowing the Baptism of the Spirit. It changes everything.

And it is amazing how people who have really changed the world were into the Bible. Like Isaac Newton – who believed he was born to help people learn the Bible, and who devoted virtually all his time to its study, and who said that he believed he came upon his scientific discoveries from reading the Bible. Or like Columbus. – atheists like to say he defied the church belief that the world is flat and sailed west based on scientific knowledge. Just the opposite is true -- no one has believed the world was flat since 300 B.C., but his proposals were always submitted to experts for review, who always found his objective was not possible – as the world was too large in circumference, and as winds going further west would be so severe navigation was not possible, and as no ship could carry adequate provisions. But Columbus defied current science, because he believed the Holy Spirit was telling him to sail west, to fulfill prophecy in having the entire world evangelized. I could go on with all the examples....

I totally enjoyed your post ... I think about people like that who just completely understood the power of the Word. I'm continually, on a daily basis so drawn to the Word that I feel completely blessed. It seems every time I blink I have handfuls of new studies to do just because of one little word or scripture.

One time I decided to pick a word from the bible and follow the verses as they branched off. In the center column of my bible is references to which scriptures relate to the one you're looking at. I picked the word Beulah. It's my grandma's name and it's only used once in the bible. I started with the verses in the center column and then the verses off those, then those, etc. I finally just called it quits after pages in my notebook ... it would have went on endlessly.

What I learned is everything is exactly as it appears, but has endless levels to it. From then on I so understood the depth of the bible and the endles, endless levels to it. When I hear the word deep in the bible that's what I think of ... the deeper you go the deeper the understanding ... It has to be that way, I think, for God to speak to everyone where they are. I believe with all my heart one can read the bible and nothing else every day for the rest of their life and learn something new continually ... and never get done ... God's kingdom is vastly larger than we can imagine, I think.

Since then I've done some pretty wild studies. I have endless notes just on the one verse Revelation 17:5.

I've become aware just how absolutely careful one must be in 'interpreting' scripture'. My new awareness speaks to me of the verse I have in my signature ... speak His Word ... it won't come back void ... ours most likely will

lilmiss,

Yes, the levels of study to Scripture seem to be endless. I was just looking at Ivan Panin's work on how the structure of the verses of the bible are based on mathematics. It is a study requiring concentration, but it is so interesting. He then uses his position to resolve any questions on how the New Testament text is established. Maybe, if I can find some time, I'll start a thread some day on what he says about Bible structure. The literary structure of the Bible has always been one of my favorite subjects -- but I base it on a review of ancient literature. This mathematics approach is something different.

Exactly! The structure fascinates me, too.

On the mathematics ... a very good source is Biblical Mathematics, Keys to Scripture Numerics by Evangelist Ed. F. Vallowe. It's just been invaluable to me ... it's not about deciphering ... it's understanding the representation of numbers by the way in which they're used every time. I've often thought of doing a thread on them, but seem to hold back for some reason ... I think I'd start with the number ten ... it's interesting in the NT unless ten literally means ten or values of ten it is always used in connection when addressing disciples (ten is representative of testimony - law and responsibility) ... but one verse only is speaking to the apostles ... you learn through it that a disciple is someone who is disciplined and learn discipline by God in their ways. I think you'd really enjoy the book.

On the ancient ... I did a study of the scriptures in the bible with the word ancient and the words old paths ... another fascinating study ... it gives you an almost primitive and simple, and somewhat harsh feel ... like a time where things were definitely more black and white and a lot less grace.
