vain, profane, and foolish babblings
Paul said some religious discussions are not only profitless but enable strife and division.
1 Timothy 1:3-7
warning against false doctrine
As I besought thee to abide still at Ephesus,
when I went into Macedonia, that thou might-
est charge some that they teach no other doc-
trine,
Neither give heed to fables and endless gene-
ologies, which minister questions, rather than
edifying which is in faith: so do.
Now the end of the commandment is charity
out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience,
and of faith unfeigned:
From which some having swerved have turned
aside unto vain jangling;
Desiring to be teachers of the law; understand-
ing neither what they say, nor whereof they af-
firm.
1 Timothy 4:7
a good minister of Jesus Christ
But refuse profane and old wives' fables, and
exercise thyself rather unto godliness.
1 Timothy 6:3-5
warning against false teachers
If any man teach otherwise, and consent not
to wholesome words, even the words of our
Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which
is according to godliness;
He is proud, knowing nothing, but doting about
questions and strifes of words, whereof com-
eth envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings,
Preverse disputings of men of corrupt minds,
and destitute of the truth, supposing the gain is
godliness: from such withdraw thyself.
1 Timothy 6:20,21
the good fight of faith
O Timothy keep that which is commited to thy
trust, avoiding profane and vain babblings, and
oppositions of science falsely called so:
While some professing have erred concerning
faith. Grace be with thee. Amen.
2 Timothy 2:15-17
advice on personal conduct and relationships
Study to show thyself approved unto God, a
workman that needeth not to be ashamed, right-
ly dividing the word of truth.
But shun profane and vain babblings: for they
will increase unto more ungodliness.
And their word will eat as does a canker: of
whom is Hymeneus and Philetus;
2 Timothy 2:23-26
But foolish and unlearned questions avoid, knowing
that they do gender strifes.
And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be
gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient.
In meekness instructing those who oppose them-
selves; if God preadventure will give them repent-
ence to the acknowledging of the truth;
And that they may recover themselves out of the
snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at
his will.
2 Timothy 4:3,4
the charge to preach
For the time will come when they will not en-
dure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts
shall they heap to themselves teachers, hav-
ing itching ears'
And they shall turn away their ears from the
truth, and shall be turned unto fables.
But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions,
do the work of an evangelsit, make full proof
of thy ministry.
Titus 1:10-15
warning against false teachers
For their are many unruly and vain talkers and
deceivers, specially they of the circumcision:
Whose mouths must be stopped, who subvert
whole houses, teaching things which they ought
not, for filthy lucre's sake.
One of themselves, a prophet of their own, said,
The Cretians are always liars, evil beasts, slow
bellies.
This witness is true. Wherefore rebuke them
sharply, that they may be sound in faith;
Not giving heed to jewish fables, and command-
ments of men, that turn from the truth.
Unto the pure all things are pure: but unto them
that are defiled and unbelieving is nothing pure;
but even their mind and conscience is defiled.
Titus 3:9-11
the discipline of factious men
But avoid foolish questions, and geneologies, and
contentions, and strivings about the law; for they
are unprofitable and vain.
A man that is a heretic after the first and second
admonition reject;
Knowing that he that is such is subverted, and sin-
neth, being condemned of himself.
