Books that would make good movies, and those that wouldn't/don't.

For the first category, I submit:

Garet Garrett's The Driver
Lewis' The Space Trilogy (probably as a miniseries)
Heinlein's The Moon is a Harsh Mistress
The Pilgrim's Progress (yes I know it has been, but never very well)
Stephen King's Cell
Dean Koontz's Lightning
A Wrinkle in Time (because it hasn't been done yet. NO IT HASN'T THAT ONE DOESN'T EXIST.)
Maniac Magee
I would also like to see a movie about the radical elements of the American Revolution as documented in Murray Rothbard's history of the American colonies, Conceived in Liberty. Sort of an answer to that pro-Federalist John Adams series that came out recently.

For the second category:
Atlas Shrugged (although they're going to try)
The Wheel of Time
The Sword of Truth series (although they are doing it, and it's pretty lame)
Any more books in the Dune saga
Any more romance books, ever. (Just kidding; I just won't watch them.)

Hm, haven't read that one. I've read Dragon Tears, Lightning (obviously), Cold Fire, and Phantoms.

Actually, any of his books that I've read would play well cinematically. He writes like a screenwriter.

He does, love his books. I think you'll really like The Taking. Great Great Book

King and Koontz-probably all books would be good movies.

Sword of truth: if they can get funding, and invest in state of the art special effects, I think this would be a great movie. I agree the series is/was(?) a failure. I do not believe most fantasy sword and magic books can pull off a tv series.
The series changes alot from the books. It is a time after the end of the books.
It is very difficult to have epic villians every week, and have some sort of new twist on how they conquer the villian.

They've made some King books into some pretty crappy movies. A few good ones too, though.

oh yeah they butchered a few of his, The Langaliers and The TommyKnockers to name a couple

but there were Masterpieces as well
Carrie
The Shining
Misery
The Mist

Re: Sword of Truth:

I think Wizard's First Rule could be made into a good movie. It's a pretty good stand alone novel. Other than that, no. I'm also very disappointed in the television series.

I'd also like to see The Children of Hurin made into a movie.

I would like to see movies from the following books under the authors:

Gail Carson Levine:
Ever and Fairest
Edith Pattou:
East
Zoe Marriot:
The Swan Kingdom and Daughter of Flames
Apryline Pike:
Wings
Lisa Mantchev:
Eyes Like Stars
Alyson Noel:
Evermore and Blue Moon

I know these probably aren't very popular books, but they could make it.

I don't think a story has to be popular for it to make a good movie. Quite the opposite, in fact, since it's easier for people to see a movie based on an obscure story as its own separate work of art instead of rigidly comparing it to the original.

I'd like to see Stephen King's The Dark Tower series made into movies, as long as they don't cut a lot of stuff from the books (which, given the length of the novels, would probably happen). I heard something a while ago about Ron Howard making The Gunslinger in the next few years, but apparently they scraped that idea.

As much as I love The Catcher in the Rye, I don't think it would be good as a movie. J.D. Salinger always resisted the idea of allowing someone to make it into a movie and I think he was right to do so.
