Jesus Reclaims His humanity
In this picture I chose to depict Christ during the first moments of His resurrection. He is seated inside His tomb. Christ joyfully lifts His wounded hand to the Father and shares with the Godhead the triumph over death. I am often disappointed by Christians who seem to believe that Jesus left His humanity behind in the grave. I am passionate about emphasizing His humanity. Here's the reason why:
Jesus is still a Man. Glorified, but still a Man. He did not leave His humanity in the grave. The book of Acts 2:27 says that His body did not see corruption. Jesus encouraged His disciples to touch His wounded hands and feet, and Thomas to put his hand in His side. A spirit has not flesh and bone as you see I have. Luke 24:19, John 20:27 Speaking of the wounds of Christ which were clearly evident in His risen flesh. These marks were not mere scars, they were wounds. Jesus told Thomas to put his FINGER into His wounds and his HAND into His side. Yes that place wear Christs side was pierced by a roman spear was large enough for a mans hand. The three Marys also grabbed a hold of the feet risen Christ and worshipped Him. Matthew 28:9 Later the apostles witnessed the same Jesus ascend into heaven physically and were told that He shall return in the same manner He ascended. Acts 1:11
Yes Jesus is a Man. He is a Person. He has feelings and emotions. He is the same Jesus who walked in Israel full of compassion, healing sickness, forgiving sins, touching the outcasts and rejected. If you were to see Him right now you would see a Man standing with hands and feet, face and hair, eyes and a mouth still bearing in His body the wounds of crucifixion.
He is not an ethereal Being, floating around somewhere, distant from our problems, stoic and unmoved by what we suffer. He is not a statue or a stone but a Man who is sympathizes with our weaknesses having been tempted in every way as we are, yet without sin. Hebrews 4:15
This is the wondrous thing about God the Son. In the incarnation He chose to clothe Himself with humanity and at the resurrection He chose to glorify the same humanity. This does not mean that Christ is no longer Man. In fact Paul the apostle calls Him the glorious Man Christ Jesus! I am glad a human Savior intercedes before the Father for me, The Son of God and the Son of Man!
