• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Who said that altering your state of mind was immoral? I think taking something that leaves you with less free will and in a place where you no longer know right/wrong or real/not real are the things that make taking drugs/drinking in excess "wrong."

Taking anti-depressants does not change your state of free will or cause you to be unable to decide right/wrong or real/not real.

As far as anti-D's go...if you're going to take them, get therapy as well or they are not nearly as helpful. It has been shown that therapy and anti-D's working together are more than twice as helpful than therapy or anti-D's alone.

But in a single answer to your question: No. Not in the least.

Right on, Gal. Immoral? Then when I'm down; I can't do things to cheer me up? When I'm tired, I can't rest? Why, I've been known to alter my state of mind right there in church! Just give me the right music!

More to the point, clinical depression is itself an altered state of mind, resulting from an imbalance in brain chemistry. It's been more and more shown that drugs are needed to restore that balance. Without them, talk therapy is no more effective than it would be for food poisoning. But you're also right, M. E., that the talk therapy is essential for any lasting change. In severe cases, there may be an ongoing need for medication, but often therapy can lead to discontinuance

No taking meds is not imoral. Because the way i see it is altering the state of mind is basically loosing control. Like when drinking or on drugs you ability to make decisions is comprasised, when taking meds this is not the case

If altering your state of mind is immoral, is it immoral to take anti-depressants when you have been diagnosed with depression?
anything can alter your state of mind. Like music, cheese :yum: , chocolate  . It is just what is going to alter your mind to think upon good things, and what is going to alter your mind to do bad things?
