...when someone says Eragon is one of their favorite books? Believe it or not, it happens. If it comes up in a context that's bad for debate, I hold my tongue. But if the situation's appropriate, here are some of my favorites:

"I suppose if you enjoy sitting down on a rock to ponder what just occurred every two pages, I can see why."

"...She's a vegan in a leather suit. Did you catch that?"

ROFLMAO!!! ^_^

I normally end up debating with the ones who just keep repeating, "But he was fifteen when he wrote it!" and "I bet you didn't write a novel when you were his age."

My response: "Who cares?" and "You're wrong. Thankfully, my parents don't own a publishing house and I didn't get that piece of crap released to the general public."

I know! I hate when people pull that one. If my fifteen-year-old-novel was released to the reading public...*cringes at the thought.*

I'm confused, I thought that his parents started the publishing house just so they could publish his novel

Since I'm still in High School, it is amazing the amount of people who like them. All of my friends do anyway, and all they're talking about is the next one coming out.

You could always ask them where his books will be ranked 10-15 years from now, and them compare them to some of the greats like, Jules Verne, H.G. Wells, J.R.R. Tolkien, Hemingway, etc. I would even go back further and mention the classics of Homer and Cervantes' Don Quixote.

I'll admit that I have never read any of his novels. However based on what I have read of them, both here and on the web, they're equivalent to 90% of the garbage in the book store; same story rehashed a dozen times. Complete with a neurotic dragon wishing to be human, who is unaware that the local village idiot is trying to slay him, hoping win the maiden's heart. While off on the road to adventure, he is unaware that his true love is actually having an illicit affair with the ettin that lives in the cave outside of the forest, and secretly wishes the neurotic dragon would crispy fry the village idiot into a human shaped charcoal briquette. Of course, the quest is not be complete without the idiot savant as the town elder, leader of the peaceful, hookah-smoking elves, and proud owner of finest collection of fezzes this side of Sha-na-nah.

Ok, so I went a bit overboard. :D

I should try those lines! My brother reads almost nothing except Paolini's books.

My younger cousin, who is a very good writer, was in awe of Paolini until she found out his parents had a publishing company. I would die of embarrassment if what I'm working on at the moment was made public:p

I don't mind reading them, but they're basically dumbed down versions of LOTR and that kind of thing. Too much magic as well.

I have not read Eregon, don't know the story, and know nothing about the author other than what I've read here, so I am not necessarily trying to defend him in particular, but can you name three current authors who can compare to the greats? Can you name two? How about even one that you might put in the same caliber of those guys? Isn't that what makes them great?

I might try to compare this author to more average writers to demonstrate any shortcomings he may have.

Lol wow. I can't believe this thread's still around.

A lot of it is chalked up to personal preference, GrinningDwarf, but Paolini is bad, imo, by standards of predictable storytelling, boring-ness, poor character development and even grammar. No, not everything has to be a classic, but it should at least be interesting and well-crafted.
