Police are questioning two people in relation to the bushfires in southern Australia that have killed at least 181 people and left 5,000 homeless.

Detectives had responded to a report of suspicious behaviour in a badly fire-hit area of Victoria state, they said.

The investigations are in their initial stages, and police would not say if the two being questioned were suspects or in custody. Neither has been charged.

At least two of the deadly fires were started deliberately, authorities say.

My condolences to those affected.

It's hard to imagine what goes through the mind of the arsonists. Are they watching the news of the carnage and feeling themselves mightily accomplished, successful, prime time stars or something?? This is their idea of fifteen minutes fame?

Thrill Arson 2
  • “Delinquent” firesetter~~~11+
    • arson to cover up vandalism
    • targets may be abandoned buildings--or revenge targets
  • “Pleasure” arsonist
    • children or juveniles who love fire
    • fantasize about fire
    • most likely group to eventually set fatal fires
    • fantasize and dream of fire
    • stay to watch fire/masturbation
    • sex arsonists as adults

Arson is of course a criminal offense in Victoria (whose punishment is being reviewed), but the effects of the behaviour are particularly dangerous and volatile on days such as last Saturday where conditions are highly conducive to breeding large uncontrollable infernos. The daily heat was furious as it is, coupled with intense winds and hectares of eucalyptus trees for fuel - it is a recipe for a tragedy such as the one we are witnessing now and that fire-fighters are still struggling to bring under control. The extent of many of these fires could have largely been minimized or totally prevented if it were not for the exercises of arsonists acting on an already extraordinarily hot day.

Before we judge them as evil maybe they didn't comprehend the devastating effects of their actions and are truly sorry.

:sigh: So the arsonists waited until the conditions were "perfect" to maximize the havoc?

You, take good care there in Melbourne.
