No, inspired.

Read 1st Timothy 3:16, sir :)

Without the Word of God, where would you find the Trinity? How would you know of it?

The Word of God is God's ... well, Word. That's rather important.

But what does it matter? Both have to do with God. Is one aspect of God more important than another aspect of God?

Haaa, don't you love us humans, we always have to rate things, we always have to have a top ten list.

I personally do not need a rating system for the Bible.  I believe that it is the most important book in the entire universe and that the study of His Word is CONSTANT.  What I am primarily looking for is a little help in defending my faith in the necessity of Bible.

Now please understand that my friend is a physicist who came to know Christ about 7 years ago.

Just for clarification that is actually 2nd Timothy 3:16 and the word used in the original Greek for the phrase "[is] given by inspiration of God" is: theopneustos.  Which does mean "inspired by God" but has also been translated as "God Breathed" which can also be translated as an "expiration"...

I agree, but the main question of concern is the Bible a pre-requisite for receiving salvation.  Whereas there is no salvation without the Father and the Son, and the working of the Holy Spirit that follow...

My point was that we humans love to rank things, 1st, 2nd, 3rd. What came first the chicken or the egg. Is the Bible 1st or 2nd. Sometimes these questions lead else where. Why does your friend feel the Trinity is more important then the Bible? Knowing a little more about your friends thought process and position, will help others to give a more clearer response.

Just a thought ;)

Hi,

Here are my thoughts on this matter.

If you are asking the importance of the doctrines, then I will have to say that the doctrine that 'the Bible is the Word of God' is more important than the doctrine of the Trinity. These are my reasons:

1) The doctrine of the Scriptures as the word of God even appears in the Old Testament, but the Trinity is stated as a doctrine in the New Testament. Old Testament believers needed one doctrine but not the other.

2) The doctrine of the trinity comes from the scriptures. Therefore it is logically prior.

Here are my responses to your comments.

Close. The Greek used means "breathed out". Traditionally, this was translated as "inspired", because that is the Latin translation of this Greek word. But the real meaning all along has been "God breathed".

I agree, but the main question of concern is the Bible a pre-requisite for receiving salvation. Whereas there is no salvation without the Father and the Son, and the working of the Holy Spirit that follow...

I don't think that that is his question. You are asking about the importance of the existence of Bible vs. the Trinity. He is asking about the knowledge of their existence.

FWIW, I came to God long before I was convinced that the Bible had anything to add to my experience of Him, and it worked just fine for me.

God does not have to have a book present to work. To say that the book is *necessary* seems to be bordering on idolatry; the book is a tool, and only that. God has many tools, other people among them, for communicating to people.

Yes, and it was a very good answer: I came into Christ's Kingdom, not through the Bible, but through Christ.

I learn things through many sources; I learn by experience, by logic, by science, by talking to people. God can guide us whether or not we have a leatherbound magic talisman.

I can be saved by Christ without a Bible. I cannot be saved by a Bible, without Christ.

not so sure about the second part of your statement seebs since the bibles sole reason for exsistance is to point you to christ. Scritpure is very important and is needed to know how to live your life. Its God's manual on how to live, thus it is very much needed.

If there were no Christ, a Bible would not save me, certainly.

Many people have become Christians, but had no Bible, and it seems likely to me that they were saved. Many people have Bibles, but no faith, and it seems to me that they are in grave danger.

Yes, the Bible is *useful*. However, if I am for whatever reason unable to get one, this is not going to keep Christ from saving me, or keep me from seeking God and finding Him.
