Hello!

I am collecting books for our local detention center. I was wondering what books you have read recently that seriously impacted your life and were relevant to what you are facing as a young adult today. I am a tad old...LOL forty-ish. And while I remember what it was like to be a teen, I am not a teen today (or a young adult for that matter).

Any thoughts?

Ooh, let me see:

The March of Unreason by Dick Taverne. It takes apart the fundamentalism seen in the green lobby - Greenpeace, Friends of the Earth and so on, explores the benefits and pitfalls of organic farming, GM and the like... Excellent read. But does possibly mean that I've been wasting my money for years :(

Your Memory: How it Works and How to Improve It - does exactly what it says on the tin. Takes a bit of wading through, but still very much workwhile.

Tricks of the Mind by Derren Brown - talks us through his various skills including hypnosis, suggestion, illusion and so on. He's an absolute genius.

Wild at Heart is the most amazing experience a man of any age could wish for. The fact that Jesus was a Real man is a fact that the church of today has kept hidden. And by doing so, it has emasculated generations. I just returned from a Wild at Heart boot camp in Colorado, and I can honestly tell you that it was the most amazing experience of my life. The masculine heart has been stolen and this has caused turmoil beyond measure. This book helped me to restore my relationship with my heavenly father. Sadly, most residents of detention centers share a common life thread, absent fathers. This books guides the healing of those wounds and empowers the readers be the MAN that God intended. I would love to tell you more about this experience. I have worked at a youth detention center and can empathize with your mission. You have to get this resource and use it. PM me for more details.

The Road is potentially a very good book for this. It contains an intense amount of violence and its about a world that has been completely destroyed. But its about the love between a father and his son despite the horror of the situation and it glorifies the child's hope in humanity despite having seen the worst side of humanity.

It was written by the same person that made No Country for Old Men (Cormac McCarthy) and it won the Pulitzer Prize a couple years ago.
