This was asked several times in another thread, but maybe it got missed each time among all the posts in that thread (which dealt specifically with this issue of Messianics and kosher food). So I figured I'd ask over here.

Can someone post here a link to one of the major Messianic organizations sites that spell out exactly what the laws of kashrut entail for Messianics?

Thank you! :)

as you well know - the organizations with in MJism are loose communities and not Beit Din...

kashrut in this movement is not totally dissimilar to some communities in mainstream Judaism..... the local Rabbi is the source for each community on this topic, although some small communities have tried to begin the process of building a Beit Din/Halakic board.... and with mainstream Judaism there is an analog spread from reform to orthodox among this community

1) we are forced outside of the mainstream community and thus have not access to the authorizing sources available there
2) we are relatively young and have not developed the resources (Beit Din, etc) that 6thousand years has afforded mainstream Judaism

Actually I didn't know. I hear and see acronyms such as MJAA, UMJC, IMJA, etc and assumed that these were the main organizations who 'call the shots' so to speak for the Messianic religion. What are these groups then?

What do mean by
we are forced outside of the mainstream community
if there isn't one overarching mainstream community with Messianic Christianity?

Thank you for responding, Henaynei! :)

Also from that site

There is no biblical ground for bidding Messianic Jews to keep kosher. But there is, however, a biblical imperative to forbid folk from insisting that Messianic Jews must keep kosher.
So why the uproar over Messianic prisoners not being entitled to the more expensive kosher meals that real Jews get when the messianic pastor the state consulted stated that is not a requirement for Messianics to keep kosher?

:( I'm sorry I was not clear - I was referring to our (MJism) being outside the mainstream Jewish community - my bad for not being clearer.

MJAA, UMJC and IMJA are all paid membership organizations, more like unions, and none set doctrinal standards. UMJC has come the closest and is moving in that direction but like the other organizations they are beset by a preponderance of folk who "joined" and did not do so to be told what to do or not do, as it were - thus the process of moving away from that mindset and function is slow.

eh. that's like asking if you can have gentiles at seder... some brands of judaism you can, others you cant. it's not decisive. it just happens that for the most part, with jews, regarding food, it is... but this is certainly not 100% either. KWIM T?

From that site:

How can it be an expression of Jewish identity and culture for people who are not practicing Judaism anyway? So if a Wiccan decides to only eat kosher, is that for her an expression of Jewish identity?

Yeah, that is a strange quote.....it is not an expression of Jewish identity
and culture, it is the observance of the mitzvot that the Almighty has
given us....

Unless they are saying Jews who are messianic are not held to observing
the mitzvot of kashruth....I'll have to go to the site and take a peek.
Looks like interesting reading.

Well, the Torah quite clearly says what we should eat and not eat.
However, it sounds like there are various branches of MJ, and this
must be the opinion of the "Reform" part of MJ.

from the quick glance I gave that site, they are more Christian than Messianic in their other practices so I am not surprised they don't think you have to eat kosher, but dont' judge all messinics on that site.

I would say the clincher was not IF you observe kashrut, but WHY ..... I think this is also reflected in Torah.... if you do so to obey HaShem - score; if you do so because you think it is healthy or kewl or for acceptance or to earn a relationship with HaShem, etc.... - fly ball!
