Welcome to the forums STWB. My advice to you would be stick with it. If playing the bass (which I personally do, but let us not let that make my input biased) is something that you love to do, then by all means play! God has given us particular gifts, and the best way to discover what your gifting is, is by finding what brings you the most pleasure doing. Hope I made sense there.
So if you love to play bass, and playing bass for the worship team gives you an avenue of ministry then by all means join the team. At the same time, practice, practice, practice! In your own spare time at home, practice along with music or CD's. Your practice could also be a part of your quite time with God, and what better way to get close to God than through music. If you've got a bass in the team, then you'll probably have drummers. So I'd suggest you get to know one of the drummers, or the drummer and practice with him. Jam together.
There's not much I can give in the way of advice for your worship team as a whole. Far be it for us to say what another church should be doing or how it should be doing things. To be a truly effective in any church ministry, organization is essential. You can hardly run anything without some sort of practice or planning.
But that all depends on the size of a church, or what role does worship play in a church. And on top of all that, it's under the guidance and will of the church leadership. Who knows, maybe in time you yourself might be come worship leader and then you would be able to instill some guidelines or organisation and practice for your worship team.
God Bless!
