Pray for my father, age 93. The other night, we heard him (we are upstairs) yelling. Went down and he claims we were too loud, he heard loud voices, near the kitchen. Hes actually so hard of hearing he cannot hear the smoke alarm.
This morning, we'd been sleeping a few hours when he kept yelling and walking back and forth.
I went down, and he claims he heard me on the phone, and I was in trouble legally, something about a Jim.
I was sleeping.
hes having auditory hallucinations, or maybe the start of dementia.
Pray?

Lord I lift up howarddeans father to you Lord I just pray that you would comfort that old man, and just draw him near to you. I just pray that you comfort him, and let him know that you are there for him, and never will leave his side. Just touch him with your mighty hand, and cast out all the evil spirits. If he's not saved Lord I just pray that you would use howarddean or somebody else to reach out to him. I pray this all in your name: AMEN!

Father in heaven,
Comfort our brother in his time of confusion. Father, we ask that any hallucinations or odd thoughts be comforting rather than troubling and that this dear man can rest well and have peace of mind. Bless HowardDean and her family as they love their dad. Thank you. Amen.

:groupray: Praying for your dad's complete healing--emotionally, physically, mentally & spiritually. Praying for an answer for all of you regarding what is going on.

Based on what you said, it could be any number of things. Medically speaking, dementia is possible, as are sleep disorders or psychiatric disorders. I would strongly suggest having him to go the doctor (ideally a gerontologist). You may want to see if a sleep study can be ordered for him (unless the doc feels conclusively that it's dementia). Of course, you may want to investigate things in the spiritual realm as well.

Regarding dementia, does he show any signs of dementia during waking hours? What you describe could potentially be an intermediate sign; however, normally there is not just one single sign of dementia.

Here are some signs of dementia from emedicinehealth:

Early dementia

  • Word-finding difficulty - May be able to compensate by using synonyms or defining the word
  • Forgetting names, appointments, or whether or not the person has done something; losing things
  • Difficulty performing familiar tasks – Driving, cooking a meal, household chores, managing personal finances
  • Personality changes (for example, sociable person becomes withdrawn or a quiet person is coarse and silly)
  • Uncharacteristic behavior
  • Mood swings, often with brief periods of anger or rage
  • Poor judgment
  • Behavior disorders – Paranoia and suspiciousness
  • Decline in level of functioning but able to follow established routines at home
  • Confusion, disorientation in unfamiliar surroundings – May wander, trying to return to familiar surroundings
Intermediate dementia

  • Worsening of symptoms seen in early dementia, with less ability to compensate
  • Unable to carry out activities of daily living (eg, bathing, dressing, grooming, feeding, using the toilet) without help
  • Disrupted sleep (often napping in the daytime, up at night)
  • Unable to learn new information
  • Increasing disorientation and confusion even in familiar surroundings
  • Greater risk of falls and accidents due to poor judgment and confusion
  • Behavior disorders – Paranoid delusions, aggressiveness, agitation, inappropriate sexual behavior
  • Hallucinations
  • Confabulation (believing the person has done or experienced things that never happened)
  • Inattention, poor concentration, loss of interest in the outside world
  • Abnormal moods (anxiety, depression)
Severe dementia

  • Worsening of symptoms seen in early and intermediate dementia
  • Complete dependence on others for activities of daily living
  • May be unable to walk or move from place to place unassisted
  • Impairment of other movements such as swallowing – Increases risk of malnutrition, choking, and aspiration (inhaling foods and beverages, saliva, or mucus into lungs)
  • Complete loss of short- and long-term memory – May be unable to recognize even close relatives and friends
  • Complications – Dehydration, malnutrition, problems with bladder control, infections, aspiration, seizures, pressure sores, injuries from accidents or falls
I hope all of this helps. Feel free to PM me if you'd like. :) May God bless you as you care for your dad!

Ah! One more important thing. You may want to check the side effects of the medications he's taking as well as possible interactions. Has he started or stopped anything recently (intentionally or unintentionally)?

Some medicines can cause hallucinations and sleep disturbances when you start or stop taking them.

To find out about side effects and drug interactions, I use drugs.com, but I'm sure there are other equally good places online for that.
