Divided house

Suppose that a youth minister who is working within a church already ...with a missional focus and a conservative outlook finds him/herself, after a change of pastors, working under a pastor who is liberal and quite non-missional in outlook. This creates a bit of a tension in terms of what each one thinks is most important for the church to do. What do you suppose is the best course of action for the church? Would it be better in the long run if the youth pastor resigned his/her job and moved on? This is not hypothetical. It is real, so please reply in all sincerity.

It is an employee's job to fit in his boss's plan for the organization. God made this pastor the leader of the church for this time, and just like David's submission to Saul, you must submitt to this new leader, or you must leave. It is never the job of the employee to struggle against the boss.

If you find that you cannot fit into the boss's plan anywhere under any circumstances, then it is time to find a situation more in line with your own goals and mission.

The youth pastor can still persue his missional focus, but on a personal basis. The new pastor may not be mission minded, but he can be talked to a reasoned with that missions is an important area and that all missions questions and concerns be put into the hands of the youth pastor. I see no reason why the two differing views can not fit together. The bottom line is that the pastor is the top leader.

Conservative: Again, on a personal level the youth pastor can still be conservative, but he's going to have to make room for a little liberalism.

The youth pastor may want to move on. I've had to do this myself in the past. I was not a lisenced youth pastor, but I was filling the spot. I had conservative views, and I got tired of saying stuff like, "I would choose a more conservative approach, but pastor is a little liberal, so you may want to ask him."

In this case the pastor is a universalist and strongly believes that missions is NOT important and actively puts down attempts to do anything mission oriented. The trouble is that this is squashing an established youth ministry.

Then you definitely don't want to be there!

God is not a universalist. You can't follow this man's vision of God and the real God.
