A young college student set out on a spiritual quest for the truth. Across the street from the campus was a very conservative church with a well dressed congregation.
One day the young student decided to visit the church. He walked into the church with jeans, a T shirt, wild hair and no shoes. As he walked up the aisle He realized the service had already started. Since the church was completely packed, there were no seats left, so the young man just squatted down and sat on the carpet in the aisle.
Although perfectly acceptable behaviour on a college campus, this had never happened in this church before. Seeing the young man sitting on the floor, the congregation grew really uptight, and the tension in the air grew thick.
From the back of the church, a deacon slowly began making his way toward this young man. The deacon was in his eighties, with silver gray hair and dressed impeccably in a three piece suit. Assisted by his cane, the man began his walk toward this young man. Everyone thought, You can't blame the elderly deacon for what he is about to do. How can you expect a man of his age and his background to understand some college kid sitting on the floor?
It took a long time for the deacon to reach the young man. The church was utterly silent except for the clicking of the deacon's cane as he continued down the aisle. The minister could not even preach the sermon until the deacon did what he had to do.
Finally the deacon reached the young man, dropped his cane on the floor, and with great difficulty he lowered himself and sat down next to the young man to worship with him so he would not be alone.
Everyone choked up with emotion. When the minister gained control, he said, What I am about to preach, you might never remember. What you have just seen, you will never forget. I pray that you will never forget the one who reached down and touched you. Go and do likewise.
