RIYADH, 17 April 2004 — The imam of the Grand Mosque in Makkah told Muslims yesterday it was their duty to foil terror attacks as the Kingdom battles Al-Qaeda-linked terrorists.

Describing the terrorists as “deviants” and “outcasts”, the imam, Sheikh Saleh Bin-Humaid, told thousands of worshipers who thronged the Grand Mosque to inform authorities about “this misguided lot whose ignorance of their faith made them kill fellow Muslims in the name of Islam”.

It's good to see Muslim leaders speak out against terrorists. I would have liked him to have included acts against us infidels also, but I suppose I can only ask for so much.

Presumably the Imam, in this seemingly praiseworthy call to follow God, rather than human suggestion as to how acts of violence might constitute such following: would have to equally condemn as "deviants" and "outcasts", all those who have killed Muslims, and all those who encouraged and directed such killing; which, if I am right in thinking us citizens of the UK and the USA, must include you and me, and our leaders.

Beyond that, in his frustration with those he would have follow his lead, being pulled to some sympathy with these "deviants": he may, if he yields to that frustration in the manner of our own leaders, and much of our media; be tempted into perspectives of diatribe which betoken no more than powerlessness, in the face of people driven and unfolding events.

There is no simplicity in the Imam's message, no simple propoganda element to be pulled.
It is wieghty, but not simple: it may have great consequence; but in a fluidity that has already seen the defeat of the USSR, even that is not quaranteed.

"Terror will not change politics, it will only bring destruction and could open the way for foreigners to intervene. It is not lawful to protect these deviants and all of us should denounce them,” Bin-Humaid added.

This was another element of the Imam's perspective: that those of terror are to be opposed; because it might lead to our further presence in their lands.
