• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Anybody with an eating disorder SHOULD NOT FAST!!!!!!! End of discussion. No ifs, ands or buts. Don't play with recovery. Don't use something holy, like fasting, as an excuse to use your eating disorder. That is not honoring God, nor your body. Get help from a qualified professional and stop playing around with the eating disordered behavior.

Yes I've thought of it. But I've never done it. It feels sacreligious IMO to want to fast for Lent but really all you can think of is yourself and losing weight. That's not what Lent is about, so I make sure I don't. But then again, I don't really celebrate Lent. That shows how warped I am - that I would consider giving up something for Lent, even though it's not in my tradition, simply to try to lose weight. :(

 people with starving EDs should fast by commitments in other things, not food: like diabetics who need to eat due to meds. they must fast by commitment in other areas.

fasting by giving up computer for bible study...

fasting by commiting your time journing letters to God...

or no tv...

it's about sacrificing something you do to help you focus, meditate, and be disaplined in God's word and to seek His presence. :groupray:

Being in a similar situation befor we might start it with nothing but good intentions, however it may back fire. I still stumble and fall with my ED so I would have to give up something without it having to be related to food. I'm a big Mt. Dew drinker so I could give that up. Just try something else. God knows our struggels and will accept what you can give him.

I've thought about this before. I have tons of admiration for people who fast for the glory of God, and it makes me really sad that I'll never be able to do it, because I know I won't be doing it with a pure heart.

take out the word *never*... it's all in what you can give the Lord. you can give him a weekend in giving something up... or a day in dedicating yourself you something for His glory. you can change your weekly schedule to do something golifying. etc. ... i went 'X' days without talking to anyone once. :D

I never have. I've never celebrated lent, but I have wanted to use just a normal fast as an excuse not to eat. This year, since my boyfriend will not let me just not eat, I'm trying to do so eat as little as possible and the least fatty stuff. Like I wanted to only be able to drink water, not be allowed to have chocolate, and not eat any bread products. My boyfriend didn't like these suggestions, eventually I got him to agree, except for the bread part. He's too worried that I won't get enough food, he didn't want me to stop eating at all, he says that I can't because it would do me harm because I don't eat enough as it is. I don't think that it is true though. So we will see how it goes, I know it is wrong, and I don't want anyone to do it because it is wrong to use it as an excuse not to eat. Not all my motives are because I want to use lent as an excuse, but I want to give up things that are important to me, like chocolate and soda and all that junk, which in the end will be good for me as well.

Well, I am following the Orthodox fast this year. My ED manifests itself as compulsive eating, so for me, I don't have physical concerns with fasting. However, my priest is aware of my ED and he wants me to check in with him on a regular basis. We have also discussed the possiblity of abstaining from binges as a form of fasting for me. I will also be abstaining from other things that harm my walk with the Lord, such as raunchy, Howard Stern-type talk radio and hateful political talk radio, limiting my internet time, in addition to making a commitment to attend more services, spend more time in prayer and spend more time with my kids. I think if anyone is interested in religious fasting, one should speak with a spiritual advisor who is aware of your ED.
