This is my personal testimony - I've been a member of the Evangelism Explosion (EE) group at my church for the past two semesters and in the first semester, one of the trainee requirements is to write out a personal testimony. Someone that I hope will become a friend asked me to post it and so I'm sharing the text of what I wrote for EE...
Before I received the gift of eternal life I was headstrong and stubborn.yet I had a fear of death and dying. Being from South Louisiana, hurricanes are no small thing for us to deal with. During the time I lived there, we were visited by a multitude of them, as you would probably expect and the idea of a storm such as Betsy (1965) or Camille (1969), to name a couple of well-known hurricanes, coming at us really scared me.
Then when I was 14, due to the persistence of a lady named Mrs. Doris, in the church in which I was raised, I received eternal life. She didn't give up on me, but rather got through to me about what others had attempted to explain to and share with me in the past, but had been unable to penetrate the wall that I had put up.
Now that I have eternal life, I no longer fear death or dying. For instance, at the end of February, 2002 I was involved in a car accident that likely should've taken my life. It was a "hit and run" type of accident, where I tried to get out of the way, actually heading for the median, but could not escape in time to avoid the collision. When my car was hit, I lost control, went across two lanes of interstate traffic, was hit again (whether by the same or a different vehicle to this day I don't know), went airborne, and flipped around while in the air a couple of times, then landed and rolled several times. The car finally came to a stop in a patch of grassy mud on the side of the interstate. My car was totaled and the person(s) responsible for the accident were never caught so that they could be held accountable under the law. However, I basically walked away from this accident with only some scratches and bruises, although I did go to the Emergency Room as a precautionary measure.
Through this ordeal and a later health scare in 2003, I saw God's faithfulness as He brought me through it all. I know for sure that I have eternal life and that I am going to Heaven when I die, as I was never afraid of death and dying when these things happened.
