Believe

Believing in the Bible? I guess you mean what does the Bible mean when it talks about 'believing' rather than what does it mean to 'believe in the Bible'!

Belief has various shades of meaning. There is an intellectual assent to the existence of something - as in 'the demons believe and tremble' - which actually changes and achieve nothing of any6 cosnequence. But then there is also a 'believing and acting positively upon that belief' - more commonly/accurately known as 'faith'. "Faith without works is dead" says James - ie it is mere empty belief, without any active response or practical effect. The kind of 'belief' which God/Christ seeks from us is the belief which translates into action. If we truly believe in Him, we obey his commands, and generally behave as if He is who He says He is. Then, like Abraham, because of our active response, we become justified by our faith and our works acting together in accordance with God's nature and command.

Believe is related to these words but not quite the same: Hope, faith, assurance, trust. Truelight mentioned the demons and this make a good point.
James 2:19
19 Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble.

Why do they tremble?.....You know why. You see there is a head belief and a heart belief. Many will miss heaven by 18 inches......the distance bettween the head and the heart.
Rom 10:9-10
9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

See the word "heart" . You know what this means. The heart is the sincere part of our soul and spirit. Once this kind of belief is apprehended then the born again experience happens. This is true salvation.

believe... is to believe the word of God in our hearts, what else's there?...
trust in the word!

Ahem... believing is one thing, accepting is another
Well, to begin with... All human has a small instinct to know that there is a God. But to be accepted into heaven, it is not enough by just believing. There should be acceptance and declaration of the belief by the believers. I can said that I believe that the orange that I'm holding in my hand is sweet but without me touching and tasting it, I will never know the truth. Actions must accompany belief. That's why Christ said, baptizing them in the name of the Father of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaches them what I have commanded you....
