I have seen several places (capalert.com, for one) that some Christians believe that viewing sin for entertainment is a sin. For instance, if you are watching a movie where a child disrespects a parent, your viewing that sin is a sin in itself. Presumably the Bible would be exempt from this because it's not really "entertainment" in a strict sense.

What do you think? This would disqualify a Christian from enjoying almost every book, movie, and TV show in existence (not just modern "degenerate" ones).

Then one might as well abstain totally from any movie or TV programme or book or magazine or play or concert because you never know what you are gonna see.

I think that's absurd bondage. Christ has set us free and everything is "permissible" but we are not to be mastered by any.

1 Corinthians 6:12
"Everything is permissible for me"Ðbut not everything is beneficial. "Everything is permissible for me"Ðbut I will not be mastered by anything.

1 Corinthians 10:23
"Everything is permissible"Ðbut not everything is beneficial. "Everything is permissible"Ðbut not everything is constructive.

We have a freedom in Christ. It's not about is this sin is that sin, but about being led by the Holy Spirt. eg If you feel an unction in your spirit not to watch a certain movie then dont.

I suppose I could understand that in a way. Some might think that things viewed on television are more pervasive than things read about in books. But I don't know if there is any proof to back that up.

I do agree we as Christians should take responsibility on our own to monitor what we watch. Like it or not garbage in garbage out. I use to think that wasn't true and till I took a 2nd, longer look at it. Just remember God IS there watching tv with you.

I think the people in question would deal with this by saying that the Bible is not "entertainment" and thus isn't applicable here. But I think that some of the stories in Genesis, Judges, Kings, etc. were intended at least partly as entertainment, so I'm not sure how well this runs.

I think it's when we delight in the sins of others is when it becomes sin. I mean we witness sin a lot in our everyday lives, but we are not sinning because we see it.

Can you clarify this a bit? Let's a take one of my favorite shows, Law and Order. There are two main sins in this show, murder, and lying. The murder is essential to the show, without it none of the plots would even start. And if the suspects did not lie to the detectives, or if no one lied on the witness stand, then the stories would be a lot weaker because there wouldn't be as much complexity to them.

Is this delighting in sins? I'm honestly not sure. I don't feel that watching Law and Order is a sin, but of course that's just my personal opinion.

Isaiah 33
14 The sinners in Zion are afraid; fearfulness hath surprised the hypocrites. Who among us shall dwell with the devouring fire? who among us shall dwell with everlasting burnings?
15 He that walketh righteously, and speaketh uprightly; he that despiseth the gain of oppressions, that shaketh his hands from holding of bribes, that stoppeth his ears from hearing of blood, and shutteth his eyes from seeing evil;
16 He shall dwell on high: his place of defence shall be the munitions of rocks: bread shall be given him; his waters shall be sure.

Thing you need to remember is examples like that in the bible there help us LEARN. There are a lot of things on TV where they try to make sin appear it's the norm, that's it ok, that there isn't anything bad about it. In the bible we learn from the sins and the things that can come from them.

I'll use tv / movies as an example. TV and Hollywood are morally bankrupt. They glorify fornication, drunkenness, and a host of other things. They glorify it.
Say you have a video lesson at church that has a moral lesson in it. Say it's about a girl who gets pregnant and ultimately, the show is about christians loving her and leading her to Jesus. That's good. It does not glorify fornication and doesn't show her fornicating for 15 minutes from five different camera angles. Do you see what I mean?
If you say that the mere presence of some type of sin makes something evil then you can't read the bible.
The bible doesn't glorify sin, it glorifies God and goodness. But people sin in the bible and they usually suffer for it.

Well, depending on what you mean by "glorify", I don't think that's necessarily true.

I'll return to Law and Order as an example. I don't think that show glorifies murder, because the whole show is about the process of catching the criminal and putting him in jail. It's true that sometimes the criminal is found innocent, but usually when that happens the purpose of the episode was to expose some flaw in the judicial system or to make a point about racism or some other social issue like that.

Now, I'm not trying to make too big of a case for L&O -- it's entertainment, not a morality lesson, but I think that some shows on TV are more "worthwhile" (whatever that means) than others.

One of the only TV programs I watch is Star Trek the Next Generation. There is much law and order in it because of the military environment and following orders and regulations. There's also alot to do with watching over the crew for their good.

Most shows glorify sin as a norm. I don't watch it. Neither do my boys, ages 11,10, and 8. My personal beleifs are if you can't control what you watch and put restraints on what you watch, then you need to throw your TV away. If your life is lived around a tv, then throw it away.

Glorify wasn't the best term to use.
My beef is the show "Friends." It has no redeeming qualities.
Most rated R movies have a gratuitous sex scene that has nothing to do with the plot. You don't need a gratuitous sex scene in any plot really. The movie Goodfellas. I love that movie, but they do nothing but cuss and shoot people. I don't watch it anymore. I watch movies over and over.
You get my point? There's a difference.

Law and Order, that's a pretty cool show I think.

Well, of course! If you needed the sex scene, it wasn't gratuitous. ;)

I think there are cases where sex scenes matter, and cases where they don't. There are also cases where they advance the plot, and cases where they're just irrelevant to it... and even cases where they really detract from the plot.
