If the elect are Jews, then why were Gentile churches called God's elect in the Book of Peter????

(1 Pet 1:1-2 NIV) Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, To God's elect, strangers in the world, scattered throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia and Bithynia, {2} who have been chosen according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through the sanctifying work of the Spirit, for obedience to Jesus Christ ....

(1 Pet 2:9-10 NIV) But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. {10} Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.

(Rom 2:28-29 NIV) A man is not a Jew if he is only one outwardly, nor is circumcision merely outward and physical. {29} No, a man is a Jew if he is one inwardly; and circumcision is circumcision of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the written code. Such a man's praise is not from men, but from God.

LouisBooth-

Good point; Here's another thought, The word originally meant only those of the tribe of Judea, leaving the other 11 tribes out. The point I would like to bring out is; dealing with scripture and what bible teachers do to the word. Teachers pick and choose to build their doctrine.

Also, anyone could be come a Jew under the old covenant. It was not closed to birth.

The Jews were the elect of the Old Covenant, the term originally referred to the remnant of the Kingdom of Judah captured by Nebuchanezzar who returned to rebuild the Temple. In or near the year 1BC John Hercanus prosyleted many Edomites and others in to Judaism. There were also Jews scattered abroad through Europe and Asia at the time and all these in Christs time were collectively known as Jews - much the same as today. Jesus then Nullified the old covenant and instituted the new Covenant - and those beleivers or partakers of the new covenant - to the Jew first and then to the Gentile - became the elect. Please do not take identity in being a Jew unless you have Jewish parents. It is much more blessed to be called the Elect.

I figure that since Jesus was a Jew and one of the elect , infact , he was the elect one.

I figure that if we as christians follow Jesus as lord then we would be his and therefore be a part of the Jews and therefore apart of the elect..

As paul says , we were grafted in.

the saying elect didn`t originate from the captivity , they were called the elect before that.

Isaiah 42:1
Behold my servant, whom I uphold; mine elect, in whom my soul delighteth; I have put my spirit upon him: he shall bring forth judgment to the Gentiles.

Isaiah 45:4
For Jacob my servant's sake, and Israel mine elect, I have even called thee by thy name: I have surnamed thee, though thou hast not known me.

there was also Jews (or isrealites ) that were classed as the elect that were not from hebrew blood even in the old covanant.

Rahab was not of hebrew blood but she was of the elect and even , part of the direct genetic line of David and the massiah (Jesus)if I remember correctly.

so , the elect one isnt even pure blood from Abraham.

The term Jew is fundamentally restricted to God's chosen people in the physical sense in that they were all descendants of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. As such they were given a special relationship with God and the promises of God. The coming of the Messiah and their rejection of Him has changed that, in that, the Gentiles have been given access to the Father.

Whilst we should never distinguish between physical and spiritual (Greek thinking) as man is a whole unseparated being in the eyes of God (Hebrew thinking), spiritually we are all unregenerate until we come to Father through His Son (Jesus/Yeshua) by The Spirit. So, the position today is that there is no difference between Jew and Gentile - you are either redemmed or remain in your unregenerate state. In that sense, those who are redeemed are all alike be they originally Jew or Gentile.

All the promises made to the Jews are available to those who are redeemed, with one exception - the land. The promise of the land was made to the Jews and that promise still remains and is only for the Jews.

It is interesting to note what is hapening in the Middle East today. The promise of God that the Jews would inherit the land still remains - God's covenants are inviolate. God is fulfilling His promise to bring the remnant of the Jews back home to the land and thus the establishment of Israel and the people in the land (according to God's original covenant and promises) is key to the fulfillment of prophecy and the return of Jesus/Yeshua. No wonder the enemy wants to do everything he can to stop the promise being fulfilled because by doing so (plus a load of other things - too long to go into now) He could prevent the return of Christ (or so he thinks so - you'd think that he'd learn that he can't out-do God).

Not so sure the word nullify applies here. God don't go back on promices.

Amen, Louis. Perhaps FULFILLED is better used.

And I agree, God doesn't break His promises. We'd be in a world a-hurtin' if He did!

Peace be with you,
