All you have to do is imagine Ringo Starr reading it out loud. It's hilarious.

This week, we join the crowds by the shore of the Sea of Galilee (or should that be Liverpool Bay?) for a Scouser's version of Jesus and the miraculous catch of fish, taken from The Gospels in Scouse:

One day Jesus wus talkin to a big crowd on de sea shore. And as the crowd got biggern bigger de fellers at de back started shovin ter gerra good look at im. Dat put the top at on ut! Dare wasn't any crush barriers or nowt like dat. Tings soon started ter look nasty for everybody, an specially Jesus. E'd uv been smashed ter pulp by de stampede in no time if e adden acted smartly.

But dare was a cuppla fishin boats pulled up on de beach. Dare owners were by em washin out dare nets and listnin to im preachin, same time.

'Quick lads,' sed Jesus. 'Do us a favour, willya?'

Day cotton on quick an shoved one a de boats out in de water. Den Jesus opped in wid dem.

De fellers on de beach cud all see im den, do day stopped dare shovin and maulin, an Jesus wus able ter sit in de boat and talk to dem all in safety.

After e'd sed wot e wanted to e gev over an sed to de lad ood done im de good tern, 'Let's go out dare whur its deep. You deserve a good ketch fer dat.'

But dis feller – is name wus Peter – wasn't all dat keen. E'd bin at it all night. Catched nowt needer. Besides e wus a professional an didn't think much uv takin advice about fishin from a carpenter. Owever, Jesus jest smiled, so ter please im like Peter oisted de sail and off day goes.

But wen day chucked de nets over de side Peter laughed on de other side uv is gob. De nets shot down as if day'd caught a whale or summat. Before e cud scratch is ead dare was so many fish in de net day cudden pull it back by demselves.

'Ey, youse lot!' yelled Peter to is mates in t'other boat. 'C'mere!' An wen day came day filled both boats so full day nearly sank wid de weight.

You'd uv thought Peter'd uv bin as pleased a punch. But not im. E feel flat on is face in frunt uv Jesus an sed: 'Don't pal up wid me, Boss, I'm jest not good enough for you.'

But Jesus sed: 'Don't let dat worry yer, lad. From now on you're gunna catch men instead of fish.'

An wen day'd got ashore day left an follered im.

To Jeff:

Lemme see pics of you and Conan side-by-side. Because frankly, if you tell Ringo to stop shaving for a week and then place a dishtowel on his head, he's a <gasp> "ringer" for Arafat.

Oh, man, I'm gonna burn in heck for that terrible pun!

Peace be with you,

Personally, I didn't find Mr. Hoge's "RPV" very amusing. It's more polemical than apologetical, and is confrontational and demeaning, rather than working in a sprit of ecumenism like we as Catholics, are called to do.

And then, to bring it to the Interfaith Forum is just asking for trouble... as if we don't have enough to discuss there, without having them think we're intellectual snobs.

To nyj:

Yeah, you're right. I posted it here as a joke, though.

Kinda like the antidote to Boettner's BS. And I'm sure that's what patriarch had in mind when he took it to IF.

But some narrow minds won't see it that way.

God help me, I get so TIRED sometimes...

Peace be with you,

The thing that makes it so amusing is that it is so on target and such an effect riposte to the endless allegations that we Catholics are not coming from a scriptural perspective.

I didn't post it at Interfaith to be amusing, but because it raises very serious and substantive issues and does so very effectively.

Hoge illustrates perfectly that sola scriptura people are reading the scriptures through the eyes of the Reformers, whereas the Catholic position conforms to what the scriptures actually say. This is very ironic.

The Protestants (for lack of a better term) tell us what the scriptures *mean,* while we simply adhere to what they *say.* E.g.: This is my body; Thou art Peter, Whose sins you shall forgive; Son, behold your mother, etc.

No wonder they call it bashing. What else are they going to do? It's an overwhelmingly effective argument, for which they have no answer.

As a protestant, let me repeat what I said in the other thread (off the top of my head.)

I thought it was funny and quite on target. I would like to think that the folks at my church would think so as well.

The thing is that many of the verses that are parodied are exactly what protestant argue about among them/ourselves.

VOW, if you don't like where the other thread is going, why don't you contact an Admin, ask him/her to lock it after you post an apology.

However, I will keep a book mark of it. :)

To Tinker:

I have a hard time apologizing for bashing people when I work so @#)&%#* hard weighing each of my words so that I don't come across as bashing.

Besides, I fulfill ALL my apology requirements at home, apologizing to my husband after every argument, even though HE is the one who is wrong..... ;)

I'll be in the Freezer, guys...

The thing that makes it so amusing is that it is so on target and such an effect riposte to the endless allegations that we Catholics are not coming from a scriptural perspective.

It's "on target" for some non-Catholic Christians, especially Calvinists and OSASers. However, they do not make up all non-Catholic Christians. The fact that it is a parody means it's intended to make fun of people, and when you make fun of someone's religion, you're just asking for trouble.

Mr. Hoge is a good Catholic apologist, and his material is often excellent. When I first saw that parody on his site, I was disappointed. When I saw it being used as "serious Apologetic material" I'm even more ashamed.

I didn't post it at Interfaith to be amusing, but because it raises very serious and substantive issues and does so very effectively.

Knowing the sort of clientle that frequent the Interfaith Board, a couple of things should have been obvious from the get-go. And I know most of us frequently post over there so this should have been obvious.

1)Some people* there are thin skinned, it was going to offend them.
2)When some of those people get offended, they get irrational.
3)When those people get irrational they post stupid stuff.
4)The stupid stuff escalates into ad hominem and flame wars.

If it wasn't obvious that this happens, one only need to take a look at the Interfaith Board at this present moment (what, five or six threads are currently closed?) and then come back here to read me write "I told ya so."

Second, not many people react to sarcasm very well, especially when you're attacking, literally, the heart of their faith. Saying "Protestants distort the Bible" always falls on deaf ears, because if they actually thought that they did twist the Bible, they wouldn't be Protestant... right?

The Protestants (for lack of a better term) tell us what the scriptures *mean,* while we simply adhere to what they *say.* E.g.: This is my body; Thou art Peter, Whose sins you shall forgive; Son, behold your mother, etc.

As a Catholic, who (I hope) knows how the Catholic Church interprets the Bible, you should know that we do not take the Bible literally in all instances (neither do the Literalists, but that is neither here nor there). Hence, this claim that we simply adhere to "what they say" is not entirely correct. We adhere to how the Catholic Church tells us they should be adhered to, which is the entire point of Apostolic Succession, Church Authority and Infallibility. Until you can get non-Catholics to appreciate these positions, anything else you have to say is wasted bandwidth.

* Notice I said "some" and not all. There is a significant difference between those two words. If you look at who often posts on that forum, and how they act (ie: the squeaky wheels), you'll see what I have said rings true. If you're offended by this comment and think I am referring to you... before you get mad at me, ask yourself "why do I think he is referring to me? (ie: why such a guilty conscience?)

*squeaky wheel*............yeah, that sums it up!

I still think it's hilarious...but I'm so sick, I thought the George Carlin post was hilarious, too. I also watch and laugh at Drew Carey, Who's Line Is It, MAD-TV, and I wouldn't miss a M*A*S*H re-run for love or money!

My mother taught me at an early age: laugh at life. If you don't, you're going to be miserable at all the crap you have to deal with.

Peace be with you,

Yeah, well, so what? Isn't that the Pharisee's lament to Pontius Pilate for writing that Jesus was king of the Jews? Pilate had a right to write this, and it was the truth.

I thought there was a lot of truth to the RPV. I may even find myself quoting it from time to time.
