  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Why don't catholics support the death penalty?

Beautifully said. This single sentence sums up my opposition to the death penalty perfectly. People who commit murder should be imprisoned for life, without chance of parole. Society should not be forced to receive them back into our masses. However, considering the security provided in modern...

What we are learning about same-sex "marriage"

I needed to step away from this thread for a while and pray. While vitriol is par for the course with hot topics such as this there are limits that should be respected. Tearing someone's ideas to shreds in the course of making a point is acceptable, questioning someone's faith is not. While I...

What we are learning about same-sex "marriage"

So couples that are elderly or are sterile should not be allowed the benefits of marriage either? Is the argument that allowing homosexuals to enter into a state (not sacramental) marriage will somehow jeopardize the existence of the said society. Of all the perils our society faces in these...

What we are learning about same-sex "marriage"

Ah, you have to love statistics for their ability to prove everybody's point equally. I find this debate to be a clear sign of hypocrisy and a collective consensus that legislating against the smallest minority to protect a majority is logical, let alone fair. What are the real threats to...

    Protesters outside of Mass

Assuming your guess is correct, I fail to see the logic in punishing children to prove that child abuse is wrong. While I think that the Church has handled the pedophilia problem exceedingly poorly for many, many years these types of protests do harm to those already in pain. I was away from...

    Liberalism is a sin...

Our Holy Church is neither liberal or conservative, in the political sense of those words. One of the things that brought me back home to the Church, outside of Her blinding beauty, was Her ability to stay true to God's word without falling prey to the political discourse of the day. When the...

Illegal immigrants and the Bishops appeal

How does "Catholic Charities" downplay who they are...do they operate under a pseudonym? As far as the Bishops stance on illegal immigrants, from what I have read and heard the issue has not been with wanting to grant unconditional amnesty but rather with the fact that the proposed law, as...

IMO there is, at many times, a wide division in what governments deem as legal and what the Church teaches us is sin. Not to bring up another heated topic but abortion is a perfect example of that. The Church is standing up against the government and saying, "Sorry...you're wrong." On the...

    A young family in need

Today at work I received the e-mail below. The person that sent it is one of those people who sends out a ton of e-mails everyday with little safety blurbs and multiple fund raising requests for the same event. I must admit, although it is not very Christian of me, the vast majority of these...

When I was saying my morning prayers today with this month's copy of "Magnificat" I came across a quote from the Gospels and subsequent meditation on it. I found it appropriate to our conversation here. "God's sun rises on the bad and the good, he rains on the just and the unjust." (cf. Mt...

The other issue to keep in mind is that many times the homeless suffer with mental health issues. A person who may seem sane standing on a corner might expose deep mental illness when placed in a work environment. Seems we blew a little off topic here. Sorry for my contributions in that...

I'm sorry if that is the incorrect impression that you were left with. I don't deny that there are people grossly abusing welfare and all other social services but they are not the majority. While it is easy to sensationalize the actions of the dishonest few I would rather focus on continuing to...

I used to play a lot of clubs in lower Manhattan in my younger days and shared pizza pies with NYC homeless on many occasions. While I'm sure they had their vices, who doesn't, they also needed to eat. Maybe the people you encountered weren't into McDonalds. Perhaps they saw "Super Size Me"...
