  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

What is the hebrew word for "paradise"

The Hebrew word is pardes, which is cognate to the English word paradise. The source of the word is Old Persian. It means orchard or walled park. The word appears three times in the Hebrew Bible, Ec 2:5, Song 4:13, and Ne 2:8. In Jewish literature the term Gan Eden (Garden of Eden) is often...

Much less commonly the word refers to a cutting instrument. Then it is usually translated as ploughshare as in Is 2:4.

    tehilot leoni

I'm not a native speaker, but it's Ps 102:1-3a. There are lots of repeats! BTW he has a very strong Ashkenazi pronunciation. Note that the numbering is different in the Hebrew Bible. This corresponds to the superscription and verses 1 and 2a in the English Bible.

    Learning Biblical Hebrew: Alphabet

They are cantillation marks. Cantillation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Note that these are found in printed Bibles, but scrolls contain neither nikud (vowel marks) nor cantillation marks. These were added to the Bible by the Masoretes starting around the 6th century CE, eight to nine...

    Learning Biblical Hebrew: Alphabet Sounds

Perhaps I might make a few comments for anyone who is an aspiring Torah reader about the pronunciation commonly used in synagogues today. The gimel with and without a dagesh is pronounced as "g", the dalet with and without a dagesh is pronounced "d", and the tav (taw) with and without a dagesh...

    Black Hole

One should not try to read the modern idea of energy into anything written before the 19th century. The term was first used in its current sense in the first part of that century, and did not acheive its current importance until the formulation of the First Law of Thermodynamics in the middle of...

So I want to understand the sentence structure

Ahhh, good old Hebrew grammar! Never leave home without it. Simple, clear explanation that I believe any student can understand. Hebrew can also use pronominal suffixes with verbs, prepositions, and particles as well as nouns. This usage helps give Hebrew its distinctive sound. Not part of...

    Meaning of Hebrew Word

You're welcome. It gives me a warm feeling when the time spent looking for the correct meaning is appreciated. Strongs 3237 is almost certainly based on a textual error according to BDB. Equidistant letter sequences (ELS) only work if the text is perfect down to the last letter. The current...

    Meaning of Hebrew Word

I would agree with Jason that time would be better spent in serious study of Hebrew rather than this "weird pursuit". I too believe that the results are random. Now back to the original question. For what it's worth, a case can be made for yod-mem-shin being the Biblical Hebrew word "yameish"...

    A Thought for the Season

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O9TuqSkd94s&feature=related The link sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. This is one of my favorite songs. The words are simple: Hodu l'Adonai ki tov, ki le'olam chasdo. Give thanks to the LORD for he is good, for His loving kindness is forever.

    A Visual Pun

Although the sign appears rather small in this picture, I hope that you can see it well enough to see what I call a "visual pun". http://www.etzhaim.org/ In the picture you can see the sign identifying the "Tree of Life Congregation" or in Hebrew "Etz Chayim". It is hard to see, but below...
