  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

    Denominations are bad mmmmkay?

It would appear to me that this part of your post fundamentally misunderstands how Luther conceived of the project of reform before and after the disaster of the Peasants War. He really did not conceptualize it as one grand, sweeping break with the Catholic Church. Also, in terms of method...

I Affirm the Symbol of Orthodoxy

    I affirm it. Amen!

Did the Virgin Mary remain a virgin?

If that is the case, then fundamentalist and Evangelical apologists would not employ the tactic of the question of sex in the Holy Family as a primary means to combat Marian tradition.

Is Christianity at it's best when it's mystical or rational?

That would seem to establish a false dilemma. There is nothing in the account of the Bereans that would preclude a balance of rational and mystical elements in one's Christian life.

    Atonement views

I do not think it is safe to make these kinds of sweeping generalizations. Modern Orthodox thinking on this theory (and others favored by the Protestant Reformers) has been guided largely by reactionary and pejorative sentiments. True, PSA is not the preferred theory of the Greek...

    The importance of Origen?

Yes, Origen has been vilified throughout history by both Apostolic and post-Reformation Christians. One can still see fundamentalists invoke Origen's name to use him as a rhetorical prop to try to "prove" that the Church became "pagan." Obviously, he does have his downsides, such as the...

    History of Icons

I think you mean Leslie Brubaker? Yes, she works on art in medieval Byzantium and has written about the Iconoclast controversy.

    History of Icons

What do you mean by that? I am pretty up to date on the scholarship in the field. I do not get the impression that the iconodule position is considered to be merely a reaction towards eighth- and ninth-century iconoclasm. Most scholars are quite willing to admit that there was an iconographic...

    History of Icons

No, I am sorry, but that is a tactic that merely hand-waves away what I have said by slapping on a misrepresenting label. You are framing the debate in a way that no Eastern Orthodox Christian does. In order to demonstrate that iconography and veneration is unorthodox or idolatrous, you...

    History of Icons

How can you conclude that it was not an earlier tradition just because a definitive theory of iconography and veneration was articulated by the eight-century church father St. John of Damascus and the iconodule position standardized at Nicaea II? You would have to conduct an extensive...

    Baptist -> Eastern Orthodox

Well, for me, it was a little bit of a different process than for most others. Naturally, as a Baptist, I had been drawn by Roman Catholicism in terms of the history and the liturgical aspects. I also had the good fortune of growing up in a Baptist church that was not overtly bigoted or...
