Books affirming Christian sexuality (spinoff thread)

I've read it and it is a very interesting book. His writing style is a bit bizarre and stilted (especially if you are not use to his format) and he gets off on tangents as he is want to do, but overall it is a rather good book. It highlights the idea that sexuality isn't always about sex.

Possibly stupid newie question - What makes the idea of universalism bad?

In some ways (and I hate to use the term devils advocate here but I suppose it fits for my argument) I can see why the idea of universalim would be threatening to a fundamentalist view. If you are raised or taught or indoctrinated into a belief system that preaches exclusivity as its main tenet...

Possibly stupid newie question - What makes the idea of universalism bad?

The testament of history was written by the Roman Catholic church which basically killed anyone who decided to speak out against them. As such, history, as always, is written by the winners and the record shows that. We are all aware that the truth is not what the historical tomes necessarily...

Possibly stupid newie question - What makes the idea of universalism bad?

You make a very bold assumption that we all take scriptures literally. Much as I state to my politically conservative friends, you cannot subscribe the tenets of what you believe from a single source to be the foundation of an argument. As such, just because you take the scriptures entirely...

Possibly stupid newie question - What makes the idea of universalism bad?

Wow. I never considered it like that. Food for thought indeed.

Possibly stupid newie question - What makes the idea of universalism bad?

It's good to see you are so strong in your faith that nothing is questioned and that the mere idea of even discussion is heretical. It's good to be reminded why I am still shaky in my faith by others.

Possibly stupid newie question - What makes the idea of universalism bad?

So universalism is bad because the sacrifice on the cross would somehow be negated? Haven't you ever done something selflessly knowing it wouldn't change an outcome just to prove a point? That is just fear of invalidation and I think since the two are not necessarily mutually exclusive it...

Possibly stupid newie question - What makes the idea of universalism bad?

Care to clarify that instead of just saying it makes Jesus a liar?

What is all this rubbish about God having a wife?

I'm quite new to most theology and most of what I read is considered pretty liberal or emergent but that sounds kinda weird even to me. Who espouses that belief and what is their main reasoning?

Possibly stupid newie question - What makes the idea of universalism bad?

I apologize if this is a dumb question, and maybe even getting really simle answers wil help me to understand better, but as a person who was always pretty much a rank and file agnostic, one of my main challenges I faceed when I became a follower of Christ was dealing with the exclusionary model...

    Answering critics of liberal Christianity

I could not have said this any better if I had tried. Bravo.

    An Atheist's Position

Condolences friend. I am in similar vein, though it's a denominational fight moreso than a belief v. non thing. However, perhaps this is your chance to give a reflection on what you really want to deal with over the long haul.

Tolerance v. Acceptance - Does one lead to the other?

Hey Hey Hey, let's not be defining words here after my mind is made up :)

Tolerance v. Acceptance - Does one lead to the other?

Some recent events in my life had me at odds with a loved one over certain ideologies and one that I thought migh have been worthy of a larger group discussion was this one. My apologies as this could delve off into philosophy quite easily. Obviously, I am of the liberal view of tolerance for...

"I'm not going to THEIR heaven...."

Apologies for the confusion. I meant that was what I said, almost verbatim actually, and in doing so, lost a person very near and dear to me because I chose to believe in love and sacrifice over something like fear and guilt. That being the case, I found the comment very refreshing.
