  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

St. Maximus the Confessor: ON THE FREE WILL OF CHRIST

Yes No. Gnomi are produced from our own nature which is fallen. Not to be confused with external temptation. They incline us toward sin. I'll be a little more specific. Our bodies create certain hormones that can affect our behavior. like testosterone. That can be a gnomi because it produces...

St. Maximus the Confessor: ON THE FREE WILL OF CHRIST

Gnomi is a word used specifically to identify a temptation that yields from the will. It is a temptation that results from the consequence of the fall. If the fall didn't occur man would will naturally. Natural in this sense is something that flows in a natural sense to always align with the...

St. Maximus the Confessor: ON THE FREE WILL OF CHRIST

In a sense yes. The way st. Maximos uses it. He internalizes it to be a function of the will. Its a temptation from within ones nature. While temptation can also come from outside sources.

St. Maximus the Confessor: ON THE FREE WILL OF CHRIST

Gnomi are a contradiction to the natural will. An example would be. If you set your intent on going to the store and you leave your house. All of a sudden your body informs you of a need to use the rest room. Your body has interfered with your intent. So you go back in the house. I'm using a...

No. Its mastery of the passions that god wants people to learn. Part of living a spiritual life involves overcoming the passions. Just because one is tempted doesn't mean they should take action on it. That comes with practice and grace.

St. Maximus the Confessor: ON THE FREE WILL OF CHRIST

In Christ, we have a situation where he can never become captive in something he can never be presented with. Hope that makes sense.

St. Maximus the Confessor: ON THE FREE WILL OF CHRIST

Here we see the struggle first hand. Law Cannot Save from Sin 13 Has then what is good become death to me? Certainly not! But sin, that it might appear sin, was producing death in me through what is good, so that sin through the commandment might become exceedingly sinful. 14 For we know that...

St. Maximus the Confessor: ON THE FREE WILL OF CHRIST

Gnomi is an outside influence that can affect behavior. In us its the passions. Bodily influence. Because man dies, he is influenced by his nature. His nature twists his arm and affects his decision making.

No. He wasn't born through generation. He is a recreation of Adam. His life, just like Adams was all encompassing and cosmological. Our lives aren't.

St. Maximus the Confessor: ON THE FREE WILL OF CHRIST

Logos pertains to the question of why. Like when one asks, Why did you wake up so early? Explaining your reasoning behind an action. The thought process one uses before taking action is logos. Tropos is how one executes an action. Like when two persons walk to the store. They may take different...

    Ritual Washing in Orthodoxy...?

Washing ones face with cold water is the equivalent in today's society's double shot of espresso. It wakes you up instantly. This is how people woke up before the advent of coffee in the 15th century.
