  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

How life is as an atheist.

That was an interesting article. It is not often I see something written from a perspective that is so close to my own. Most of the atheists I have met or conversed with via the internet have, at one time in their lives, had a god belief. I, like the author of the article, have never had such a...

    Is knowledge finite?

An interesting line of thought, but I would contend that while you may know x+y=0 (where y=-x of course), this does not equate to infinite knowledge. It is actually only knowledge of a single mathematical principle which may be demonstrated an infinite number of ways. Unless you know every way...

    Is knowledge finite?

Yeah, that is the kind of wording problem that it is easy to run into when discussing infinity. The reason I didn't say "count to infinity" is because this makes it sound as if infinity is at a particular location in the number string. There really is no way I know of to speak of infinity that...

    Is knowledge finite?

You seem to be equating knowledge with possible knowledge, which is not how the term is commonly used. Knowledge is defined by dictionary.com as: Knowledge (n): 1.) The state or fact of knowing. 2.) Familiarity, awareness, or understanding gained through experience or study 3.) The sum or...

    Is knowledge finite?

But the question was is knowledge finite. In order for it to be considered knowledge it must be possesed by someone, otherwise it may be truth, but it is not knowledge. This creates the paradox I tried to illustrate in my first reply. The fact that knowledge must be a subset of truth and that...

    Is knowledge finite?

Yes, knowledge must be finite. There could never be infinite knowledge because this would require that there is an infinite amount of things to know. But, if there was an infinite amount of things to know then one could never know them all. As soon as one knew the last thing there was to know...

Can the mind think about non-existing things?

Yeah, I can be unnecessarily wordy and somewhat rambling. That was actually a good summation of what I was trying to say. You should work with the coherence impaired. I would sign up. I'm not really sure we can have a concept of infinity even in the numerical sense. No matter how much of the...

By what mechanism does time move forward?

I am just basing this in my under-educated understanding, but I have always thought that matter and energy move through time, as opposed to time moving forward. This is to say that time would be a constant and unchanging dimension through which the physical dimensions move.

Can the mind think about non-existing things?

One can not think about that which doesn't exist and has no basis in something that exists. Even when something does have a basis in something that exists, it is impossible to think about it if it is self contradictory. We can use the famous "square circle" to illustrate this. Though both...
