  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Does the most religious side usually win wars?

Yes but so were the people they were fighting against. I actually think it depends on the religion. For religions which promise glorious afterlifes (eg. the norse pantheon) and promote violence they might actually help motivate people to win a war. Conversely if the religion stresses...

    How can science "explain" miracles?

Kind of. That's why we try to establish criteria about what is acceptable and unacceptable evidence before we go on fishing expeditions. Had you been born in ancient greece years ago you would have been one of the first to stumble onto a basic tenet of the scientific method. To the OP; I have...

Should Christians take the Bible with a big grain of salt?

Back to the topic at hand. Where I a Christian I would not try to 'interpret' the bible with a grain of salt. In general (depending on the denomination) the bible is considered to be at least inspired by god, if not a direct translation of the ruminations in his brain-box. Such a document...

    Debate or Conversation

Dialectical conversation if I was being kind. Debate if I was being realistic.

A completely original thought: Still possible? Was it ever possible?

Despite 1) Being an idea 2) Using words that have all been used before 3) Using english 4) Using quotes The above seems like a fairly original idea ;)

So it appears and it leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I wish it was at least theoretically possible.

    What is a person?

Heat and light is one the reasons I inhabit these forums :) Obviously the questions now are; 1) Is a mentally disabled person with the approximate mental function of a dog a 'person'? and 2) Chimpanzees can negotiate for good and services (including prostitution), are they 'people'?

    Epistemology

Common-sensical, supported by a weight of experiental evidence or unquestionably true for 'obvious' reasons. To illustrate; if I say that "Suffering is bad, and happiness is good", and someone asks me why, it seems that I have to admit that I think the statement is self-evidently true.

    What is a person?

Oh I see, the crucial aspect is the ability to negotiate for goods and services.

Need Help! Is This Actually Christian?

Agreed. Skinner used a box, which worked quite effectively for his daughter. It gives me a (morbid) giggle to hear people say (and I paraphrase) - "Society would be better if only people beat their children more".

    What is a person?

So an 'animal' such as a dog is person to you? They can communicate, affect their environment and act in self-defense. Come to think of it, so can bees and ants. This might be an adequate meaning of a word, but maybe not for the word 'person'.

    Epistemology

I've always wanted to be someone who could justify every part of his belief system without resorting to self-evidence.

Can't quite get the knack of 'faith'

When my actions are rational I feel proud of them. When they aren't I'm generally ashamed. I can't speak for the other 1000 rationalists you've met but in my case I would agree with your characterisation. But, what's wrong with being proud of being rational (assuming one IS rational)? If you...
