  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

is it important that mary was/is a virgin?

"Deprived"?!?!? "Punished"?!?!?!? You need to stop thinking like a product of this age. (Where's that Chesterton quote, MM?)

FB, Thank you for your sincerity and your attempts at keeping the conversation civil. Ignore the cage-rattler. :groupray:

What is the pillar and foundation of truth?

You agree that the letter to Timothy is directly about a very real church as opposed to a shapeless idea of a family of believers but you ask "What's the point?"  You read the background chapter to that verse and see it is about church governance and you ask "How does...

What is the pillar and foundation of truth?

It hasn't even been close to being "clearly shown". In fact, it's illogical and incongruous with the bible passage we are discussing. Let's read the bible. Let's stop taking one passage out of context and then twisting it to mean what we want it to mean. The letters to Timothy and Titus are...

What is the pillar and foundation of truth?

Silliness and obfuscation. Difficult points are raised here. Care to address them?

What is the pillar and foundation of truth?

Fine, that's your opinion and decision. Repeat---YOUR opinion and decision. Just don't try to pretend the practice is biblical and please don't try to pretend that your decisions are in any way, shape or form connected to the passage being discussed here. Why don't you trust the very bible...

What is the pillar and foundation of truth?

Exactly. If the church is a "worldwide family of believers" with so many various interpretations of scripture, then how in the world could that be considered the "pillar and foundation" when its "truth" is really a hodgepodge of beliefs---- the variety of which is only limited by the number of...

What is the pillar and foundation of truth?

An incredibly transparent strawman argument. Find me one quote where someone says these words exist in the passage. You mean words like "worldwide family of christians" or "the truth as found in the bible"?? We say nothing about denominations. We refer to the church period. There was a...

What is the pillar and foundation of truth?

Because if you limit what can be considered 'truth' to what is written in the bible, you are effectively saying "the bible is the pillar and foundation of truth". Now, you'll tell me that you are not limiting 'truth', you are limiting 'pillar and foundation', but it's the same darn thing...

What is the pillar and foundation of truth?

I see what you mean. So if Stephen King we're building a house but writing about it in a book, then are we to expect that there would be a complete description of the house in that particular book? Or would the description of the house be more like instructions for the pouring of the foundation...

What is the pillar and foundation of truth?

 Who would have thunk it?!? That when Paul wrote... "The church is the pillar and foundation of truth." ...what he really was doing was plugging for Sola Scriptura 300 years before the bible!:help: The argument basically is: "Forget what Paul meant and what he was referring to...

The Our Father & The Eucharist

Just to expand on the OP and on what Chacci said-- The greek word (epiouson) used in the Our Father is translated as "daily" but it the real definition is different. The word has fascinated Hellenic scholars for centuries because it is found nowhere else in the greek language except in the...

    Scapular of Mary

Right. A scapular is a sacramental. Sacramentals are sacred signs that "extend and radiate the sacraments". Here's an earlier response of mine to the question of Holy Water:

    Scapular of Mary

A scapular is a sort of mini-version of a part of clothing worn by religious (monks and nuns) hundreds of years ago. They used to wear these large pieces of cloth to signify their order or their devotion to Jesus and Mary. Lay people started wearing them in a smaller version. You take the...
