  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

    Have we ruined Luther's Catechism?

I seem to recall that in the preface to the small catechism Luther comments that the common people had a frighteningly bad grasp of fundamental concepts. Consequently the text was something of an emergency instruction book. I have a nice pocket version of the small catechism from the 80s. I'd be...

    Lutherans are Basically Arminians?

Article 5 of the Augsburg Confession says: That we may obtain this faith, the Ministry of Teaching the Gospel and administering the Sacraments was instituted. For through the Word and Sacraments, as through instruments, the Holy Ghost is given, who works faith; where and when it pleases God, in...

Young Earth Six Day Creationism: The Scandal of the LCMS

Is this certain? I can see what you're saying if we're talking about the Gospels or Acts, but does an epistle have a pre-existing tradition before it's written? You could say that about Luke's Gospel or Acts, which are reports of events some of which Luke did not witness first hand. Thus some...

Why don't we interpret the Revelation literally?

How do we read it? Why do we read it? Can you even read prophecy in a figurative manner? Doesn't that render the prophecy unfalsifiable?

"Spiritual" communion ... what do you think?

It would have been nice if the LSB had included a page called "What to do if you're in part of the world where there are no LCMS congregations"

Do Most Lutherans have a formal exorcist?

I have a difficult time imagining a Lutheran exorcism as a ritual of its own. In Luthers baptism formula there was an exorcism consisting of blowing in the ear three times and saying something along the lines of "Fahr auss du unreyner Gaist", so there is an exorcism there. But when I read...

Lutheran Equivalent To The Knights Of Columbus?

I'm really shocked that nobody has mentioned Rosicrucianism yet. KofC has always been kind of a pale imitation of freemasonry, which of course is forbidden to Catholics (and should be eschewed by all Christians) for its syncretism. Rosicrucianism is actually much more similar to freemasonry...

Should government take a stand on morality?

Very incorrect. 300,000 slaveholders owned 4,000,000 slaves in the US in 1860. The total population was 31,500,000

    Why wasn't Cain's sacrifice acceptable?

Evidently God and Oklahoma are not in agreement here. My Latin prof mentioned Cain and Abel once when we were translating a passage on something related. He said that both in Classical literature and in scripture there is a preference for the natural and pastoral over the cultivated (the...
