  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Yoga and meditation - Negative Consequences

You seem to be arguing for the sake of arguing. Nothing I've said is incorrect. You misinterpreting what I've said as an attack and you're being defensive. I used the word designed and it's true, that's what makes it different from normal exercise. It's not true that hatha yoga isn't seen...

Yoga and meditation - Negative Consequences

Look, that comparison is totally invalid. Of course yoga is designed to be meditative. If it wasn't it wouldn't be yoga, it would be exercise and or stretching. If that's what your doing and calling it yoga, well that's your opinion, but in reality its not yoga. Hatha yoga, the physical...

Yoga and meditation - Negative Consequences

I suppose you have to understand how yoga was created. If you know it's history you can't say it was intended to be a purely health orientated exercise and that it was intended to be purely physical. Traditional yoga is more meditative but modern hatha yoga is just an extension of that to suit...

Yoga and meditation - Negative Consequences

I would argue that the Jesus prayer is not a mantra, or at least, is not intended to be used in the same way or have the same affect. I'm not saying, though, that a mantra is bad or its affect is negative. That's what the discussion is for.

Yoga and meditation - Negative Consequences

This vain deletion thing just doesn't seem to me to equate well with the practice of the Jesus prayer to me. How can you call it a vain repetition? The same as the heathens do? Not only that, but you are supposed to mean it when you say it. Lord jesus Christ, son of god, please have mercy on...

Yoga and meditation - Negative Consequences

Illuminaughty Good point. I suppose though, where do you draw the line. If an exercise or method of meditation was developed to bring about spiritual changes in another relgious enviroment. Could the results of that method or exercise be at odds with that of another religion. I guess so...

Yoga and meditation - Negative Consequences

First I'd like to comment on johnathan95 last post. Although I'm not suggesting the Jesus prayer is fine that objection does not seem right. Its hardly a vain repetition. Plus it also says in the bible to make prayer continuous does it not? However, to play devils advocate. Where do you draw...

Yoga and meditation - Negative Consequences

Thanks for the replies so far everyone. Johnathan95, you seem to be pretty much dead against these npractices. What about mindfulness based mediation and the mindfulness based cognitive behavourial therapy that have been studied and shown to be beneficial? Do you have any impirical...

Yoga and meditation - Negative Consequences

Hi I have a question that's been playing on my mind. I know many Christians avoid eastern practices such as yoga and meditation as they are deemed to be occult practices that can open people up to demon possession and other unwanted negative influences. However, the thing that's been...

    Gods grace and responsibility

Just as an after thought to the above. Could the difference between meditation and prayer be this? Meditation - us striving for a goal Prayer - us asking for a goal e.g. gods mercy Vipassana has the goal of being mindful for example. Even zazen has a goal at the outset.

    Gods grace and responsibility

Hi I've been away from the forum, busy with other things, sorry for not coming back sooner. I've read all the replies. There seems to be a consensus, amongst the posters here, that there are forms of meditation that might be seen as beneficial and that god does not wish us to rely on his...

    Pray without ceasing?

Theodore and others. I wish to further talk to you about meditation and such things in relation to Christianity. In order to not take this thread too far off topic I have started a new thread in the world religions section of the forum called "Gods grace and responsibility". I would be...

    Gods grace and responsibility

All I hope you can help me with an issue that has me perplexed as I explore the world of Christianity. On another forum the subject of meditation arose. Here a poster said that meditation is ultimately unfruitful and something like the mind can only be controlled through the grace of god...

    Pray without ceasing?

Hi Theodore Thanks for your reply. In terms meditation making you a medium for other souls or spirits. How does this happen? For example, vipassana mediation involves practising a mindfulness of your thoughts and feelings and your present experience, nothing more. This is the heart of...
