  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

    Carl Sagan changed my life, in 2018

    There is one poster in this thread who would do well to heed a well known quote from Carl Sagan; "Keeping an open mind is a virtue—but, as the space engineer James Oberg once said, not so open that your brains fall out." Quote by Carl Sagan: “Keeping an open mind is a virtue—but, as the sp...”

    Ha! I knew you were going to say that! :)

    Magnetic reconnection observed on the Sun (6 years ago)

    Unless you're a bit of a science geek, it's probably not that exciting. However, the heating mechanism for the solar corona has been (and still is) a bit of a mystery. There are a number of possibilities, and magnetic reconnection is one. It is probably a combination of a number of mechanisms...

    Nice bit of footage here of MR in action;

    Plasma Cosmology in 2019-2020

    Lol. It does not resemble the solar corona. So you have not modelled it in a lab. Stop making things up!

    Plasma Cosmology in 2019-2020

    However, that is not what is being modelled here, and Birkeland's model is nothing like the solar corona.

    Plasma Cosmology in 2019-2020

    A little puzzle for everyone! A million internetz to the poster of the first correct answer! The puzzle is called 'Lerner's Conundrum.' Figure out the correct answer to the text in red in the following superbly produced photoshop mock-up of Eric's nightmare;

    Plasma Cosmology in 2019-2020

    One would have thought the fact that only electrons are leaving the solar analogue would be a clue that this was not meant to be a realistic model of the corona!

    Plasma Cosmology in 2019-2020

    Hahahahaha! Still doing circuit theory in a lab! Hilarious. And a solar corona has never been demonstrated in a lab.

    Plasma Cosmology in 2019-2020

    And it doesn't exist. I couldn't care less what Birkeland modelled - it bears no resemblance to reality.

    Plasma Cosmology in 2019-2020

    Oooooh, we know. However, your claim is that the solar corona has been modelled in a lab. It hasn't.

    There is no such thing as a 'cathode Sun'. You made that up.

    Plasma Cosmology in 2019-2020

    And would light up all-sky maps with synchrotron. They don't. Ergo, they don't exist. Next. There is no scientifically valid 'anode model'. There is no scientifically valid 'cathode model'. We know how the Sun works, thanks.
