  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Do Orthodox Christians have anything good to say about the world?

Nope, not illegal, though some Protestant missionaries have reported difficulties and resistance from government agencies. That's a long way from "Orthodoxy [having] a "consensus" created through empires and tyrrants propping up state religion". The consensus within Orthodoxy in Russia is no...

Do Orthodox Christians have anything good to say about the world?

That's a rather silly claim. The Church has had a hierarchy culminating (from an earthly perspective) in the bishops since the Apostolic age. The Bishop of Rome's assumption of supremacy and infallibility was a later development, which the Orthodox rejected. It was not heedlessly rejected...

Do Orthodox Christians have anything good to say about the world?

Thank you, I think I understand a little better where you're coming from. Actually, I think you're right: There is often a tendency within Orthodoxy to dismiss Protestant theological movements out of hand, particularly "modern" (20th century and later) "liberal" movements. I think this is...

A good book for a young first time bible reader?

To quote one of my teachers, when I first asked him for a book on Christianity: "Books? Huh. I guess you could learn something about Christianity from books..." This man is a professor, so he understands the value of books, but his point was that Christianity was never meant to be...

Do Orthodox Christians have anything good to say about the world?

Dear friend, perhaps you could clarify what you mean by "everything western"? That's a pretty broad category, and I don't know anyone who actually hates everything that could be called "western". It would also be helpful if you clarified what you mean by "our theology, our liturgy and...

Masoretic or Suptuagint ? Which one is THE Word of GOD?

Yes! Also, "meaning" in a text is never found in one word. Meaning is found in the sum of what the author conveyed to their audience. I don't know of any major translation from any source that I would consider "invalid". Read a version you can understand, and immerse yourself in the life of...

New Orthodox Denomination open for debate

My primary biblical basis for this claim is exactly what you noted: It is Christ who brings healing and life. The Orthodox Church is the direct heir of Christ's teaching and the apostles' leadership. Christ did not establish a vague and variegated set of beliefs held together by the word...

New Orthodox Denomination open for debate

I'm afraid, dear friend, that you are not going to get much traction here insisting that Orthodoxy is a "denomination". In my former post I mentioned that the primary deviation in your theology from orthodoxy is the same deviation that underlies all Protestant theology. The belief that the...

New Orthodox Denomination open for debate

Supposing this is necessary, isn't it something that can be done from within the Church? Something that can be done under the authority and covering that exists to help you grow and keep you safe? What you're doing sounds equivalent to setting out across the Atlantic on a hand-made raft with...

New Orthodox Denomination open for debate

You seem to still have a pretty Protestant view of salvation. Orthodoxy's claim to be the true Church does not even presume to automatically relegate all non-Christians to Hell, much less all non-Orthodox. The narrative of Orthodoxy is much less focused on, 'are you going to Heaven or Hell...

Christ taught sola verbum dei which became sola scriptura when the canon closed

Thank you for your kind response =) Perhaps we do not have much of a disagreement. I agree that Humans and our Sin-addled minds are largely to blame for misunderstanding Scripture. I would add that, because of this, we need more than just Scripture to live our lives as Christians. We need...

New Orthodox Denomination open for debate

Mr NOD1, Why? There are about 40,000 non-Orthodox denominations. You seem smart and articulate, which is great, but why would you need to create another denomination? Is the body of Christ not storm-tossed enough? Is everyone but you wrong? Creating a church in your own image, according...

Christ taught sola verbum dei which became sola scriptura when the canon closed

I fear, dear friend, that we might not be on quite the same page. It seems that you mostly repeated yourself, and my first instinct is to repeat myself, but that doesn't seem like it would help anybody =) Perhaps you could explain further? To clarify: I do believe that God wants me to study...

Christ taught sola verbum dei which became sola scriptura when the canon closed

Oh, decontextualized Bible verses! I'm not really sure what you're implying (because verses don't interpret themselves). Your first quote could as easily mean that we don't need Scripture: we have an Anointing that teaches us, so we don't need the writings of any old teachers. If St John...

your understanding of ancestral sin and Romans 5,16 and 18

Good! I don't think any of the authors of Scripture made Hell (or "not going to Hell") the centerpiece of their witnessing scenario either. They were much more focused on the fact that life and reconciliation with God and victory over the enemy were now open to everyone in Christ.
