  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Most recent flop from Archbishop Elpidophoros

I respectfully disagree. It is not a useless thing to say that love is needed. The caricature from the Left is that pro-life people have an obligation to promote life for the unborn, but that this obligation is primarily just that: an obligation. Obligation and love are not the same thing. So...

Most recent flop from Archbishop Elpidophoros

After reading the entire speech at Archbishop Elpidophoros of America, Introduction & Prayer, March for Life Rally - Messages - Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America , it seems as if Archbishop Elpidophoros is saying that regardless of the law, it should be unconditional love that leads a woman...

Who is ROCOR in communion with now?

Yes, I am in the the Russian True Orthodox Church - Moscow Metropolia under Metropolitan Alexy.

Who is ROCOR in communion with now?

In regards to your last part about Metropolitan Agafangel being suspended and deposed in 2009, this was two years after the split had already occurred. At that point, ROCOR under Metropolitan Agafangel (ROCOR-A) viewed those in ROCOR who joined the Moscow Patriarchate (ROCOR-MP) as having...

Who is ROCOR in communion with now?

To better explain my third factor, I meant that ROCOR had a mixed relationship with the Old Calendarists and with World Orthodoxy. It was ROCOR who helped reestablish a hierarchy for the Old Calendarists in Greece. ROCOR concelebrated with Old Calendarists before ROCOR began splitting in the...

Who is ROCOR in communion with now?

The ROCOR began to split in the mid-1990s. As a result, there is more than one synod that refers to itself as "ROCOR". From my limited understanding (although I may be incorrect), the fracturing of ROCOR was primarily caused by 1) the way ROCOR was handling/interfering with the catacomb churches...

Is the "Russian True Orthodox Church" correct?

To the OP: Keep in mind that this forum only considers those Orthodox that are in communion with one or more of the ancient patriarchs as being truly Orthodox. Since the RTOC under Abp. Tikhon is not in communion with one of those patriarchs, the RTOC would not be recommended by the majority of...

Holy Metropolitan Synod of the Patristic Calendar of the Genuine Orthodox Church of Hellas,

Well then yes, I agree that he was critical of the Pharisaism he saw among certain Old Calendarists, as well as the Pharisaism of a large grouping of Greeks who were in ROCOR at that time. These Greeks eventually left ROCOR and become HOCNA. Fr. Seraphim spent too much of his early years rightly...

Holy Metropolitan Synod of the Patristic Calendar of the Genuine Orthodox Church of Hellas,

His writings against Ecumenism and Pharisaism speak for themselves. Anyone can read the writings that he wrote later in his life to see for themselves. I've read his biography, letters, and some of his magazines too. All I'm saying is that he didn't completely equate his stance against...

Holy Metropolitan Synod of the Patristic Calendar of the Genuine Orthodox Church of Hellas,

That's not quite correct. Fr. Seraphim rightly preached against the Pharisaism he witnessed among some of the ROCOR and the Old Calendarists, but he didn't preach against the Old Calendarist movement in general. In fact, he promoted different Old Calendarist figures and monasteries in his...

Holy Metropolitan Synod of the Patristic Calendar of the Genuine Orthodox Church of Hellas,

The synod in question is a Greek Old Calendarist synod under Metropolitan Angelos of Avlona. This synod is in communion with the Orthodox Metropolia of the Americas under Metropolitan John (this is the synod I belong to) as well as a handful of different Orthodox synods around the world...

Church of Constantinople officially recognizes the Ukrainian Orthodox Church - Kiev Patriarchate

No it isn't. JasonV wasn't telling anyone what to do about the Ecumenical Patriarch, so it's not analogous to your comparison. This is a discussion board and he was discussing the topic at hand. I understand that him and I aren't considered Orthodox according to this forum's statement of faith...

Church of Constantinople officially recognizes the Ukrainian Orthodox Church - Kiev Patriarchate

How was JasonV telling you how to deal with other "schismatics?" He was just describing what the EP is doing from his POV.

    Liturgical Attire

Maybe Fr. Thomas mentioned that deacons' sticharions should be white too. I'm going off of my memory & it's been months since I heard the podcast. I still remember it though because he brought it up multiple times in the podcast, saying how serious it was. But he didn't advocate for parishioners...

    Liturgical Attire

Fr. Thomas Hopko was adamant that a priest's sticharion should always be white as it represents the baptismal garment. I forget which of his podcasts he spoke about this. He viewed the different colored sticharions to be a serious liturgical abuse since the sticharion loses its symbolic...
