  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

    Where is God? It hurts.

When someone you love has the disease of substance addiction, you wait for that phone call. You pray each and every day the phone call would be the addict themselves, telling you they want to get better and are willing to go to rehab. There is also the fear of the phone call that haunts you, the...

    The Voice of Homelessness

The homeless shelter volunteer asked me numerous questions, making notes as she spoke. “Are you sure there is not other place you can stay tonight, Olivia? I know you said you didn’t have a boyfriend–but is there someone you’re sleeping with that would let you stay with them?” I shook my...

What Not To Say To Survivors Of Abuse

I think perhaps my most favorite one, when others refer to PTSD, is when they say "Are you sure such and such happened? I mean, you DO have PTSD. How do you know you're not just being hyper vigilant?" Um, because I live with PTSD. I know the difference.

Closed Eyes, Listening Ears, Exposed Heart

I would rather have eyes that cannot see, ears that cannot hear, and lips that cannot speak, than to ever have a heart I’ve closed away. -Robert Tizon During my freshmen year of college, I knew my life had started changing for the better. Still, it wasn’t enough. I felt empty inside. I...

Scribbler of Dreams, Daughter of God

We need to find God, and he cannot be found in noise and restlessness. God is the friend of silence. See how nature - trees, flowers, grass- grows in silence; see the stars, the moon and the sun, how they move in silence... We need silence to be able to touch souls. -Mother Theresa Hello...

    Faith Whispers, Doubt Screams

When doubt screams, “Look down! Your path is rough with stones,” Faith whispers, “I’ll take your hand. It’s beautiful up higher. “Olivia, you don’t belong here. You never did belong here. You can’t make it on your own, especially in a city like Raleigh. You have no family, no job. You have...

    You're only once a stranger

As the seeker prayed, the beggar and the beaten passed by. When he saw them, he cried, “Great God, how is it that a loving creator can see such things, yet do nothing about them?” God said, “I did do something. I made you.” When passing a homeless shelter, I immediately look away. If I’m...
