  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

    Need some help

You sound just like me actually. I have a soft place in my heart for all those things you listed, and I have found a great home in the Anglican Communion (the Episcopal Church for me) after seriously considering the RC church. You'll find Anglicans come in all stripes, from those who use incense...

    Anglicans - Protestant or Catholic?

What about Richard Hooker's "three-legged stool" where tradition is one of the legs? The idea comes from his 5 volume The Lawes of Ecclesiastical Polity.

    Anglicans - Protestant or Catholic?

I'll just throw in a few of my thoughts. I've not read everyone's post in depth. 1. The best way that I've heard Anglicans described is that we are "Reformed Catholics". Many people consider us Protestants, but many Anglicans will deny that label (including me) because I think that unfairly...

    Liturgy

No, you're right. I was referring to Protestants generally. Since I've heard the "low church" description used with Lutherans (and you're right, now that I think about it, I've heard it used with Presbyterian services as well), I just used it as a short hand description of a particular strain of...

What is _the_ definition of Rite III?

I had to look up what a U2charist was, lol. While I agree with a lot of their messages, I don't know that I could handle U2 being played in a church service, haha. I'm curious about this question as well. What about Episcopal churches (mostly Anglo-Catholic) that use the Anglican Missal or...

    Liturgy

I've heard the word low church and high church used to describe Lutheran churches as well, so that's why I used it. They are certainly the original Protestants. :P I agree, it's all very personal. Again, I think anything is capable of abuse. The rejection of "posturing" to prove that one is...

    Liturgy

And I'm amused when people choose to forget that Anglicanism has always had a party that maintained the Catholic identity of the Church of England and its associates. While people like Cranmer did try to do away with things like icons, etc., he also maintained a belief in the centrality of the...

    High Church/Anglo-Catholic in Memphis, TN?

Thanks for the info Dunstan. I will check those places out. I am TEC, but I'm not totally opposed to attending an ACNA church (despite my disagreement). Good to see another Anglo-Catholic in the South though!

That might depend on how far back we go. Are considering historic Anglicanism only that which developed after the institution of the prayer book? Or are we considering it from England's schism with Rome? The Mass was very much alive and well in the earliest years after the schism I believe.

    Liturgy

I was talking about non-Anglican services, as there are some (including myself) who would argue that Anglicanism is not truly Protestantism in its truest form (but that's another debate). All of the Anglican (Episcopal) churches I have been to celebrate the Eucharist every Sunday. Thus my...

    Liturgy

Definitely prefer a structured, traditional liturgy. While I definitely feel that people should worship however they feel is the best way to connect with God, I do get a bit irritated sometimes at "low church" Protestant services that I sometimes attend with my friends. Personal opinion, but it...

    High Church/Anglo-Catholic in Memphis, TN?

So I'm visiting Memphis, TN for graduate school next week, but I'm flying down early the following weekend. Does anyone know of any "high-church" or Anglo-Catholic parishes in the Memphis area? I have a hard time finding high church parishes in my area, but I thought a larger metropolitan area...

    Guide to proper entance/crossing

Right, because God says that the only way to solidify your relationship with him is through prayer alone. Probably spontaneous prayer as well, correct? :sigh:

    I feel very lost!

If you are considering the Roman Catholic Church, I also would suggest looking into the Episcopal Church. Our approach to theology tends to stand upon Scripture, tradition, and reason/experience. We don't use the words "inerrant" or "infallible" at all, and we tend to interpret the Bible within...

    Attended Coptic Orthodox Wedding...

I attended a Coptic Orthodox wedding last weekend, and I must say it was absolutely beautiful. I only wish that I spoke Arabicas 95% of the liturgy was in Arabic. However, I'm quite impressed with the liturgy (as an Anglican I'm big on liturgy as well) and the beauty of the church (the...
