  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

What if life after death is disproved?

It could be but it is extremely doubtful that it could accept the basis of any existing religion. Would that be a problem?

What if life after death is disproved?

If I can't see it then I can't very well use it. But why would a rational God put invisible information in the Bible?

What if life after death is disproved?

This is not valid. I can define and explain the difference between a cognitive and non-cognitive system.

Is a biblical quote seen as a type of magic spell?

Your assertion doesn't make any sense. In a symmetrical argument, I would simply quote another unproven source.

What if life after death is disproved?

I'm sorry; I have no idea what this is supposed to mean.

Is a biblical quote seen as a type of magic spell?

Let's try that. 1. God must be real because the Bible says so. 2. The Bible must be true because it is the inspired word of God. That's completely circular. Similar circular arguments are: 1. I believe in God because I believe the Bible. 2. I believe the Bible because I believe in God.

Is a biblical quote seen as a type of magic spell?

Any appeal to the bible or any other holy book would always be fallacious unless you could think of a way to test and verify the quality of their authority. If some stranger claimed to be a history professor but he was unable to show a history degree or any published research then no one would...

What if life after death is disproved?

I'm not sure that you are understanding the implications. If Christians assume that they are rewarded after death with some kind of eternal life and they assume that they are distinct in this regard from other animals because of their reasoning ability then what happens when a non-human has the...

Is a biblical quote seen as a type of magic spell?

Then wouldn't you also be suggesting that if someone were asking about a particular brand of car then the only sensible place to go for info would be a dealership where they sell that car. And, presumably going to a completely unrelated dealership for a comparison would be silly.

Is a biblical quote seen as a type of magic spell?

I have no idea what this means.

Is a biblical quote seen as a type of magic spell?

But these aren't convincing arguments; they are simply quotations. That was why I first asked if they were seen as magic. But then I realized that the nature of the forum might give them an advantage that they wouldn't have in a more general forum. In other words, something that would be very...

What if life after death is disproved?

Well, I can't plan for anything that is not foreseeable. The only thing I can adapt to is something that I can reasonably predict. If there was information in the bible that was testable and therefore useful for making predictions then that would be important. I've never heard anyone make the...

What if life after death is disproved?

You can talk about your beliefs all day long. Nothing in this thread is about your beliefs. So, trying to make this thread about your beliefs is the issue, not my reply. If you have beliefs that make no predictions then they can't be tested or falsified. You can keep them regardless of what...

What if life after death is disproved?

I didn't say that. I only used that to explain why you can't have a duplicate in a parallel universe. You could theoretically duplicate your mind if you could measure everything with sufficient accuracy. However, there doesn't seem to be any way to do that. For example, if you could isolate one...

What if life after death is disproved?

You are trying to mix evidence with belief. I can only deal with theories that make predictions about the world. What would your idea about the origin of humans predict in terms of human consciousness versus the minds of other organisms? Are you saying that the human mind is nearly identical to...
