    The Start of WWIII

This is something that seems obvious to me. If anyone can say, “look! He committed mortal sins! I am a sinner, of course, but I don’t commit mortal sins“, then that seems to me that that person is by definition, excluding themselves from the Orthodox idea that “I am the chief of sinners“. It may...

    Question about daily readings

This has driven me, nuts, especially where I am now, where the Serbian calendar should have mostly the same readings as the Russian one, but sometimes they don’t. and here I am trying to prepare to understand readings in yet another foreign language, being stymied by the fact that whatever the...

This guy is a complete idiot

I think no one intends to sound harsh or nasty. But in electronic communication, we have to take special care. The others cannot see our face or body language, or hear the tone of our voice. Printed words are naked and neutral, and can have negative effects that we don’t intend. I think if we...

    Question about daily readings

I do know that for much of the year, from the Apostle’s Fast to the Nativity, readings are out of whack between the New and Old Calendars.

    Question about daily readings

My main objection is that the omissions seem completely unnecessary. I’m hoping for a more solid explanation. A history of how the designated readings developed would help.

    Question about daily readings

It seems to me that the dangers of a longer reading that is “less focused“, whatever that means, are much smaller than the dangers of omitting and what looks like censoring the text of holy Scripture.

    Question about daily readings

This is not a satisfying answer, unfortunately. I don’t think saving time is ever a goal in our worship, and I don’t think the skipped text distracts from the focus of liturgy at all.

    Question about daily readings

I have always wondered, why in the readings do they exclude and skip verses? I can’t see any rationale for today’s reading for example from the gospel of John chapter 19, which has multiple skips and I got out my KJV and looked at what was being excluded and it made no sense at all. Verses 12...

This guy is a complete idiot

Well, some of us may well have relatives or a loved ones that listen to people like this, and don’t listen to us, and at least quietly think that we are messed up in the way that this guy describes. I suppose we kind of have to know what they’re saying about us, even though yeah, it’s pretty...

    Prayer requests post here!

An update for those following my saga: the School finally paid me for the rest of the school year; thanks to the help of kind people and careful scrimping and saving it looks like I will be able to make ends meet at the beginning of the school year in a new school in another city. Glory to God...

    Prayer requests post here!

Update: Evidently, the teenager got drunk, said those scary things to my daughter, but fell asleep. My wife called her father, who checked in on her and said she was just sleeping. I don’t know what her family did after that. Hopefully, it was just a passing mood and the family did something...

The media impacting what we think we know

I should stress that this is not a defense of the Russian position. (The ”pro-Ukrainian” faction might be tempted to think so). This guy rightly weighs all sides and doesn’t end up on one side or the other. It’s pretty much impossible to be fairer than this.

The media impacting what we think we know

This channel is moving up into my top favorite group. Being fair to all sides is rare and refreshing. This one, as the thread title indicates, is about how we are influenced into what we think about Orthodoxy in Russia, media perception vs reality on the ground. This nails how we “know” what we...

A couple questions about the Septuagint

I can confirm the truth of that just by having lived with both the KJV (which I grew up with) and the Church Slavonic and Synodal version. Sometimes the KJV was clearer, sometimes the OCS/Synodal v. was clearer. I understood more by dealing with both texts and seeing it stereoscopically. Now...
